Hello, everyone.

I'm Patch.

News has come out that CXMT, a Chinese memory company, will release a new-structure DRAM product for servers within this year.

The reported target date for Samsung Electronics to adopt it is 2028.

So this is how the article headline put it.

Two years ahead of Samsung.

Uh, I thought China was only catching up to our country's memory industry, but is it already ahead of us in next-generation technology?

The technology that appeared this time is called 4F squared.

You can't really get a feel for it just from hearing the name.

It means shrinking the area of a single cell, which holds electrons and records information, from 6F² to 4F².

It means that, under the same conditions, a space that used to fit 100 cells can now fit 150.

For a company that makes memory, that's very tempting.

Because you can get more capacity from the same area without building more factories.

But if there's such a good method, why haven't Samsung and Hynix switched everything to this structure yet?

If we look into this, we'll see how far China has pursued them, and also why making DRAM cheaply is so difficult.

First, we'll take a look at how DRAM works.

Aaron covered it in detail once before on Andwae Engineering.

First, let's briefly go over again only the parts connected to today's topic.

Inside DRAM there are billions of tiny compartments that record information.

We call each compartment a cell.

Each cell contains one capacitor, which stores charge, and one transistor, which opens and closes the passage the charge flows through.

You can compare this to a small water tank and a faucet.

The capacitor plays the role of the water tank, and the transistor plays the role of the faucet.

It's a matter of distinguishing how much charge is stored in the bucket, and reading it out as zero or one.

But the problem is that the stored charge gradually leaks out as time passes.

So DRAM has to periodically read the data and restore it to its original state.

This is exactly what a refresh is.

Even when the power is on, the memory has to keep being maintained.

But if you make the cells smaller and smaller, it becomes hard to hold enough charge.

Then the bucket itself gets smaller, so if the amount it holds is small, even a slight leak makes it hard to tell the difference.

The same goes for the transistor that acts as the faucet: the smaller it gets, the trickier it is to keep charge from leaking when it is closed.

So DRAM makers have tried to reduce the cell's base area while still storing enough charge.

They have used various methods, such as making the capacitor tall and thin.

As the base gets narrower, it has no choice but to grow upward.

Land prices inside a semiconductor are as expensive as in Seoul.

But making billions of these thin, long structures identically is getting harder and harder.

In the end, because there is a limit to simply shrinking the existing structure, attempts are now even being made to change the cell structure itself.

So what appears here is 6F² and 4F².

You can think of F as the length used as the reference when making very fine circuits in a semiconductor.

It is the minimum feature size of the process.

When you draw a small square with that length as one side, that is the 'square'.

If one cell takes up six of those squares, it is 6F²,

and if it takes up four, it is 4F²; that is how it is expressed.

So, to put it simply, the idea is to change the layout and structure so that a cell that used to take six squares fits into four.

Since six squares become four, the area of each cell shrinks by about 33 percent.

But the number of cells that fit in the same space actually increases by 50 percent.

The numbers may look a bit strange, but this is correct.

Because if you use six squares each on a 600-square plot, 100 fit, and if you use four each, 150 fit.

But of course, just because the cell area shrank by 33 percent doesn't mean the total chip area or production cost shrinks by the same amount.

Inside DRAM there aren't just cells; there are also circuits that find the data at the desired location and read very small electrical signals.

When you also consider the space these circuits take up, the rate at which the actual chip area shrinks changes somewhat.

On top of that, the process of making the new structure may cost more in manufacturing.

In the end, what matters is not only how small you make the cell, but how small and cheaply you can produce the whole chip.

And when comparing, the reference length called F also has to be the same.

Even for a house with four squares, if each square is large, it can be much bigger than a house with six small squares.

So in the end, what matters is how small and how cheaply you can actually make DRAM of the same capacity.

Just because a company adopted 4F² technology first doesn't necessarily mean it can make the smallest or cheapest DRAM.

Well then, how can we fit a cell that used to take up six slots into four slots?

The key is changing the structure of the transistor.

In existing DRAM, the channel the current flows through mostly lay flat along the bottom.

But what happens if we stand this channel up vertically?

The space that used to be taken up horizontally shrinks, and the cells can be packed more densely by that much.

One of these approaches is the vertical channel structure.

You make the path the current flows along vertical, and change the structure of the transistor that controls it as well.

Earlier I used a water tank as an analogy for the capacitor.

In fact, DRAM has already been making the tank taller upward.

But this time, they are also reworking the faucet under the tank and its connection structure to shrink the floor area further.

Of course, it's called 4F², but that doesn't mean every company uses the same structure.

Since 4F² is a term for the area one cell occupies, how the transistors are arranged and connected inside it can differ from company to company.

In fact, SK Hynix's official 2025 roadmap also included 4F² and a vertical gate structure,

and also a technology that bonds different wafers together and places the circuitry underneath.

So this idea is not something brand new that only Chinese companies came up with.

As making existing DRAM smaller gets harder and harder,

the whole memory industry is moving together in the direction of changing the cell structure.

Now, but after packing the cells densely like that and saving space, another problem arises.

That is precisely the interference between circuit signals.

DRAM reads the very small electrical signal produced by the charge stored in the capacitor.

But when the wires the signal travels through get too close, then when the neighboring wire's voltage changes, the signal I'm trying to read is affected too.

For example, it's like when I'm on a phone call and someone next to me is chatting loudly, so I can't hear my call well.

In memory, this kind of thing happens electrically.

So, you've now made lots of rooms, and this time soundproofing work has become necessary.

In fact, this problem also shows up in the 4F² research that SK hynix published this year.

According to the material, they added a shielding structure to reduce interference between the densely arranged data wires.

And they explain that by doing so, errors that occur when reading signals decreased.

In the end, even if you succeed in making the cell small, the structure around it must also be refined so the information inside can be read and written stably.

On top of that, one cell working well in the lab, a whole chip working well, and mass-producing that chip stably in a factory are all different problems.

In a product where billions of cells work together, even such tiny problems can shake overall productivity.

Okay, so we've talked about ways to save area like this, but actually there is one more way.

It's simply moving the circuit that was next to the storage space down to a lower layer.

DRAM needs not only cells that store data, but also circuits that amplify small signals to read them and circuits that select the desired storage location.

If we compare it to a warehouse, it's like having a management office and a sorting facility next to the space where goods are stored.

But if you move these facilities to a different floor, you can use the same floor area much more widely.

In semiconductors too, researchers are studying a way to make the wafer holding the storage cells and the wafer holding the peripheral circuits separately, then connect them vertically.

Doing it this way, you don't just save space.

Uh, there is also the advantage that the process of making each circuit can be optimized separately.

That's because cells that hold charge well and circuits that process signals quickly have different requirements.

Previously, even the peripheral circuits had to withstand the high temperatures that arise while making the DRAM cells.

But if you make them completely separately, you can reduce these constraints.

Of course, new challenges also arise.

When attaching two wafers, you have to align a huge number of electrical connections very precisely.

If the connection positions are even slightly off, or a problem arises in the bonding, then even well-made separate circuits won't work together.

Samsung Electronics also unveiled a structure in its next-generation 4F² DRAM research where the storage cells and peripheral circuits are made separately and then joined by hybrid bonding.

You make the cells smaller, reduce wiring interference, and move the circuits underneath,

and after that you have to connect all of this stably and well.

In the end, the number 4F² is simple, but there are quite a lot of problems to solve before turning it into a real product.

So, how far has CXMT developed this technology?

According to an October 10 report by WCCFTech,

the president of CXMT said at a conference in Shanghai that they will unveil a server DDR5 memory product using the 4F² structure by the end of this year.

The reported target date for Samsung Electronics' adoption was 2028.

So going by the announced schedules alone, that is about two years faster.

But the actual product size and yield have not been disclosed yet.

The article raised the possibility that the early product is a form derived from the existing G5 process, but that is just the media's analysis.

Even so, we can't view CXMT's catch-up as a mere announcement.

Because according to materials CXMT itself released last September, it had already applied its fifth-generation DRAM manufacturing technology, the G5 platform, to mass production.

They also say they are producing mobile LPDDR5X made with this process.

There is a number here that stands out: the number of chips that can be made from one wafer increased by at least 50% over the previous generation.

Put simply, you can now make more chips from a single semiconductor wafer of the same size.

Of course, this is a figure converted to the same 8-gigabit capacity, based on the total chip count before excluding defective products.

It doesn't actually mean that 50% more sellable chips were produced.

Nor is it a result of the 4F² product announced this time.

Even so, what is significant is that it shows CXMT is not only expanding its factories but also investing in technology to produce more chips from the same wafer.

In the end, even once an actual product comes out, we have to check how small they made it and how much they can produce stably.

Only then could we say that CXMT is ahead of Samsung.

But there is one more technology to watch in the G5 materials that CXMT released: SAQP.

Semiconductors are made by drawing very fine circuit patterns on a wafer.

The problem is that when the patterns get too dense, it becomes hard to make them at the desired thickness and spacing in one go.

So they change the way they make them altogether.

First, they make pillar-like patterns with a relatively wide spacing.

Then they coat a thin layer of material on both sides of them and remove the middle pillar, leaving thin walls on both sides.

So if you use this process one more time, you can make a much denser pattern than the first.

Instead of drawing very thin lines directly with a pen like this, you make the lines using the edges of a mold made earlier.

SAQP is a technology that makes patterns dense in this way.

This is a method the semiconductor industry has already been using.

CXMT also introduced it as one of the core technologies of its G5 process.

However, there is a bit of a problem: the process gets more complicated.

You have to go through the process of coating and etching material many times, and if the thickness or spacing differs even slightly along the way, the shape of the final circuit can go off.

So how thin a line you can make is important, but

how uniformly and cheaply you can make that line is also important.

That's the reason why even with the same fine process, actual production costs can differ.

And there's one more thing worth noting in this announcement.

It's that it's for servers.

The product CXMT announced is the DDR5 RDIMM, a memory module mainly used in servers.

It looks similar to the long RAM sticks we commonly see, but besides several DRAM chips, it contains a register that receives and relays command and address signals in the middle.

Because it somewhat lightens the burden of the CPU sending signals directly to so many memory chips,

it helps considerably in improving stability in environments that use a lot of memory, like servers.

In fact, CXMT also unveiled a DDR5 memory product lineup, including RDIMM, last year.

So the part to pay new attention to this time isn't that they made server memory for the first time,

but that they plan to apply a next-generation cell structure called 4F².

But server memory isn't a product chosen simply because it has large capacity and a low price.

For server customers, capacity and price matter too, but stability is really important.

That's because servers have to process lots of data for a long time without rest,

and if a memory problem causes a failure in that kind of environment, the failure cost can end up far greater than the money saved on memory.

So once the product is actually released, we need to see which server platforms validated it and how much customers actually adopt it.

The modules seen at the exhibition being installed in data centers in bulk is the important process of commercialization.

And with CXMT's factory expansion added on top, Korean memory companies can't help but feel concerned.

According to this report, CXMT will secure wafer production capacity of around 300,000 sheets per month by the end of this year.

In the long term, we have a plan to expand to as many as 600,000 wafers a month, including new fabs.

Looking at the numbers alone, it feels like output doubles.

But there's one thing we need to distinguish here.

Even if wafer production capacity doubles, the memory we can actually sell doesn't necessarily double.

How many chips come out of one wafer,

and how many of those are good, and what the capacity of each chip is: we have to weigh all of these.

For example, previously one wafer yielded 100 chips, of which 90 were good.

But after applying the new structure, we can now make 150 per wafer.

That's a whole 50% increase.

But the new process is still unstable, so the rate of normal operation stopped at only about 60%.

What happens then?

Only 90 of the 150 chips would be sellable.

Then in the end it's the same as before.

And if manufacturing costs also rose while applying the new process,

then the cost of making each chip could actually go up.

Of course, conversely, if the yield is also secured stably, you'll be able to sell far more chips from the same wafer.

And from then on, a considerable difference arises in cost competitiveness too.

This is just a hypothetical for explanation, but it clearly shows why the memory industry has to be so sensitive to mass-production yield.

In memory, designing the smallest possible chip matters, but ultimately it's a business that has to protect its profit at the factory.

Whether 4F² actually turns into a competitive edge will ultimately be decided here.

So then, does CXMT have to catch up with all of Samsung Electronics' and SK Hynix's technology before it can affect the market?

But that's not necessarily required.

The performance and price that each customer buying memory wants are all different.

Some customers need top-performance products, but

other customers might just choose a product that roughly meets the performance they need, is cheap, and can be supplied reliably.

If CXMT meets these customers' standards and its production volume also grows,

then existing companies might also have to compete over things like price and supply terms.

In the Chinese market in particular, there's a fair chance this change will show up more strongly.

What happens if Chinese companies that used to buy Korean memory start switching to domestic products?

Samsung and SK Hynix might have to find other customers to sell that much volume to.

Then price competition could get fiercer in markets outside China too.

So even if CXMT doesn't make the best DRAM in the world, just by securing customers in some markets,

it can sufficiently affect the competitive landscape, is what I mean.

Of course, how big a change actually occurs depends on how many customers CXMT secures and how many products

it can supply reliably.

Then what effect will this have on the AI industry?

If 4F² technology gets established

and DRAM supply grows so that prices even come down, it could actually be good news for companies that develop and run AI.

AI servers need more memory than you might expect.

Memory is used not only for the data needed to run an AI model, but also in the process of handling countless user requests.

If you can buy more memory with the same budget,

it becomes easier to secure spare server capacity, or to build an environment that can handle more tasks.

But in AI, how much you can hold matters, and how fast you can retrieve it is also very important.

Let's say you made a warehouse twice as wide.

You can stack more goods, but if the door stays the same size, the speed of getting goods out won't double.

The thing that corresponds to the door here is memory bandwidth, which shows how much data can be exchanged in a given time.

Even if cells are packed more densely with 4F², memory speed doesn't get faster at the same rate.

On top of that, the server DDR5 that CXMT announced this time and the HBM used in AI GPUs have different roles.

DDR5 is mainly the system memory that CPUs use.

HBM is a high-bandwidth memory placed close to the GPU to supply huge amounts of data quickly.

HBM requires technology for stacking and connecting DRAM chips in multiple layers, plus advanced packaging that bundles them with the GPU.

So it means that even if DDR5 supply increases, the memory bottleneck of AI GPUs won't be solved right away.

However, there is a chance of lowering the overall cost of building AI servers.

If memory supply grows and prices stabilize, companies that run AI services get a chance to reduce their cost burden.

If this happens, it could be a very welcome change for companies that buy memory.

But from the point of view of companies that sell memory, the story changes again.

That's because even if the AI industry keeps growing, prices can fall if memory supply grows faster than demand.

Let me give an example.

Let's say memory sales volume rose 30% by capacity.

But what if over the same period the selling price per unit of capacity fell 20%?

Sales volume would be up 30%, but revenue would only rise by about 4%.

On top of that, to protect profits you'd also have to cut manufacturing costs enough.

So just because AI keeps growing, there's no guarantee that memory companies will keep their current high profitability.

Ultimately, the point is that supply matters as much as demand.

In fact, Micron also mentioned this kind of risk in its 2026 annual report.

Even for the same capacity, HBM needs more wafers and more production space than regular DRAM.

But if HBM demand shrinks and manufacturers shift that production capacity toward regular DRAM, what happens?

Supply of regular DRAM would grow sharply, and prices would drop.

This is a risk scenario that Micron itself presented.

On top of this, if several memory makers switch to 4F² and new fabs also start operating around the same time,

supply could grow even faster.

Of course, even if you can fit 50% more cells, it doesn't mean global memory supply will suddenly grow 50% right away.

Actual output will vary depending on how quickly the new process is adopted and how much yield is secured.

And conversely, if prices get cheaper, customers may use more memory and demand could grow.

From here on, what matters is two kinds of speed.

The speed at which AI uses memory, and the speed at which semiconductor companies produce more of it.

Even while AI is doing well, memory prices could go down.

Who profits from this structural change and by how much will show up in the difference between those speeds.

Well then, that's all for today. This was Patch.

그리고 네 칸을 차지하면 포에프스퀘어 이렇게 표현을 하는 겁니다.and if it takes up four, it is 4F²; that is how it is expressed.

그리고 서로 다른 웨이퍼를 붙여 가지고 회로를 아래쪽에다 배치하는 기술을 공개를 했는데요.and also a technology that bonds different wafers together and places the circuitry underneath.

So this idea is not something brand new that only Chinese companies came up with.

As making existing DRAM smaller gets harder and harder,

메모리 업계 전체가 그냥 그 셀의 구조를 바꾸는 방향으로 다 같이 움직이고 있는 겁니다.the whole memory industry is moving together in the direction of changing the cell structure.

그 다음에 이 모든 걸 또 안정적으로 잘 연결을 해야 하는데요.and after that you have to connect all of this stably and well.

In the end, the number 4F² is simple, but there are quite a lot of problems to solve before turning it into a real product.

So, how far has CXMT developed this technology?

According to an October 10 report by WCCFTech,

씨엑스엠티 사장이 상하이에서 열린 컨퍼런스에서 말을 하기를 포에프 스퀘어 구조를 적용한 서버용 디디알 파이브 메모리 제품을 올해 말까지 선보이겠다고 그렇게 밝혔습니다.the president of CXMT said at a conference in Shanghai that they will unveil a server DDR5 memory product using the 4F² structure by the end of this year.

그 선을 얼마나 균일하게 그리고 또 저렴하게 만들 수 있느냐가 중요한 거죠.how uniformly and cheaply you can make that line is also important.

서버처럼 이런 많은 메모리를 사용하는 환경에서 안정성을 높이는 데에 상당히 도움이 돼요.it helps considerably in improving stability in environments that use a lot of memory, like servers.

In fact, CXMT also unveiled a DDR5 memory product lineup, including RDIMM, last year.

So the part to pay new attention to this time isn't that they made server memory for the first time,

여기에다가 포에프 스퀘어라는 차세대 셀 구조를 적용을 하겠다는 거죠.but that they plan to apply a next-generation cell structure called 4F².

But server memory isn't a product chosen simply because it has large capacity and a low price.

For server customers, capacity and price matter too, but stability is really important.

That's because servers have to process lots of data for a long time without rest,

그런 환경에서 메모리 문제로 장애가 생겨버리면 조금 아낀 메모리 값보다 장애 비용이 훨씬 커질 수가 있잖아요.and if a memory problem causes a failure in that kind of environment, the failure cost can end up far greater than the money saved on memory.

그리고 그 중에 몇 개가 정상인지, 칩 하나에 용량은 얼마인지 이런 거를 좀 다 따져봐야 되거든요.and how many of those are good, and what the capacity of each chip is: we have to weigh all of these.

이렇게 되면 이제 오히려 칩 하나를 만드는 비용이 더 올라갈 수도 있는 거죠.then the cost of making each chip could actually go up.

또 어떤 고객은 그냥 필요한 성능만 대충 충족을 한다면 가격이 저렴하고 또 안정적으로 공급받을 수 있는 그런 제품을 선택할 수도 있겠죠.other customers might just choose a product that roughly meets the performance they need, is cheap, and can be supplied reliably.

If CXMT meets these customers' standards and its production volume also grows,

그렇게 되면 기존 업체들도 가격이라든가 공급 조건을 놓고 경쟁을 해야 할 수도 있겠죠.then existing companies might also have to compete over things like price and supply terms.

이게 경쟁 구도에 충분히 영향을 줄 수 있다는 말이에요.it can sufficiently affect the competitive landscape, is what I mean.

Of course, how big a change actually occurs depends on how many customers CXMT secures and how many products

이거에 달려 있긴 합니다.it can supply reliably.

Then what effect will this have on the AI industry?

If 4F² technology gets established

디램 공급량이 늘어나가지고 가격까지 내려가게 된다면 에이아이를 개발을 하고 운영하는 기업들한테는 오히려 좋은 소식일 수도 있겠죠.and DRAM supply grows so that prices even come down, it could actually be good news for companies that develop and run AI.

AI servers need more memory than you might expect.

Memory is used not only for the data needed to run an AI model, but also in the process of handling countless user requests.

If you can buy more memory with the same budget,

서버의 여유 용량을 확보를 하거나 아니면 더 많은 작업을 처리를 할 수 있는 그런 환경을 구성하기도 쉬워지겠죠.it becomes easier to secure spare server capacity, or to build an environment that can handle more tasks.

공급 증가 속도는 더 빨라질 가능성이 있습니다.supply could grow even faster.
