Hey everybody, it's Marie from Asian Boss.
If you talk to any young person in South Korea, it seems that there is a stigma towards single people.
But why is staying single looked upon so poorly in Korea?
Is it because the expectation to marry by a certain age is so strong?
We decided to set out to find out how Korean women really feel about this topic.
This time we hit the streets of Seoul, South Korea to ask Korean women
how much pressure they feel when it comes to getting married and how they cope with it.
Curious about their answers?
Be sure to watch the video till the end to find out.
Today we're going to ask ordinary Koreans about living as a woman in Korea.
May I ask how old you are?
I'm twenty-nine.
Are you married, by any chance?
I'm not married yet.
I'm thirty-five.
Are you married, by any chance?
No. I'm single.
I'm thirty-two.
Are you married, by any chance?
Not yet.
In Korean society, around what age do women usually get married?
I think many people marry around my age, that is, in their twenties, or these days from the late twenties to the early thirties.
Among the people around me, I think most get married at around thirty-two.
At what age is someone considered a bit late now?
From what the people around me say, it seems they think you're a bit late once you pass thirty-three.
Well, people around me usually say it's late once you're past your mid-thirties.
Honestly, by the old standards even my age is late now, um.
I think once you hit around forty, people would say it's late.
Also, if you're planning to have children, wouldn't being over twenty-five be a bit late?
Do you feel any pressure that you have to get married?
Of course. I feel a lot of it.
There's some, yes.
Because when my friends are getting close to thirty, they all get married as if they had made a pact.
I'm turning thirty next year, so I feel a bit of pressure too.
People around me ask a lot too.
Turning thirty seems to mean a lot.
Hmm, I think so.
Social perception is like that, and the people around me all think you should get married once you turn thirty.
Where do you think that kind of perception comes from?
Well, um, I guess it's the thinking of the older generation.
Then where does that pressure come from, I wonder?
Wouldn't the pressure be biggest from parents, probably?
Yes. What kind of pressure do your parents put on you?
Hmm. They say you should at least be married by around twenty-eight.
That way, they think, you can have a healthy baby at that time.
And then, when you retire, if you've married by then,
your age at retirement would be when you can send your children to university, I think the older people think.
Actually, it's less pressure and more that they're just curious about that situation.
They ask why you aren't doing it, whether you have plans to, and so on.
But for the person hearing it, when it keeps repeating, it can become pressure that doesn't feel like pressure.
In Korea, it's quite common to still live with your parents.
Me too, but I'm getting the hint that they'd like me to move out soon.
Even my younger sibling has already gotten married.
So they keep asking me, 'When are you going to go?'
'Why don't you have a boyfriend? Is something wrong with you?'
'Your friends are all married and having kids,' and things like that.
And my relatives keep asking why I'm not getting married, and all that subtly becomes pressure without my realizing it.
Even at work, my bosses ask me why I'm not married.
It's also a bit uncomfortable to explain all that one by one, and it really weighs on my mind.
Even if I try not to let it.
When you think about the age at which people marry, how is your generation different from your parents' generation?
My parents' generation seems to think of the mid-to-late twenties.
For us, it's from the early thirties to the mid-thirties.
Still, that's a ten-year difference.
Why is there such a difference?
I think my parents' generation didn't have much ambition for their own dreams.
But they were a generation with a lot of responsibility, so to protect that,
they put family first and tended to think of their own dreams as something for later.
I think ours is a generation that has to do as much as possible of what we want to do.
My mom got married right after graduating from university.
And that was the norm.
But nowadays, if you say you're getting married that early, people call you crazy.
That's how much the age for marriage has been pushed up; it's a huge difference from the old days.
Basically, in the past, women were more often housewives than working in a career, you know.
Because of that, since they lacked economic power, it seems they tended to run a household and live rather dependently instead of being independent.
But these days, women can be economically independent, so aren't there many who think living alone isn't bad?
When someone says they haven't married or have no plans to, what is the usual reaction?
Usually people scoff a lot, saying it's absurd.
That's because people generally think getting married and building a family is natural, so if you say you lean toward not marrying, they react a lot.
At first, when I talked like that, I used to argue back.
But lately, I figure their position is one thing and my position is another.
So I don't bother saying 'that's your view, this is mine,' and just don't say anything.
In Korea there's a term 'gold miss.'
What does that mean?
음.
Um.
I think a gold miss is someone who doesn't necessarily build a family, but lives alone and enjoys her life if she has her own ability.
I'm currently in a doctoral program.
So if I'm not careful, I could become a gold miss too; I'm exactly that target.
Isn't that what a gold miss is?
So, a woman past her mid-thirties, with what's called a stable, good job,
who can support her own life well and hasn't married, is generally what people call a gold miss, I think.
Then, how do you think Korean society views gold misses (successful unmarried women)?
To young women it might even be something idolized or aspirational, but wouldn't it be 'old maid' to older women?
Isn't it a word with a somewhat sexist tone?
Because for men, even when they're relatively older and unmarried, people don't call them 'gold misters,' right?
Right, right.
It's cool.
I think she's like a career woman, loves herself, knows herself well, and enjoys her own lifestyle,
so I like it a lot.
Now, in Korea you can see a lot of marriage agency billboards.
For our overseas viewers, could you explain what a marriage agency is and how it operates?
네.
Yes.
First of all, in Korea there aren't many opportunities for men and women to meet and mingle.
Compared to abroad.
At least in my experience.
Because of that, there are parents who gradually get older and worry about their children's marriage,
and, half by choice and half not, their personal details and information get registered, like in a talent pool, a people pool.
You pay a set fee to such a place, and it's on the condition of a certain number of meetings.
Such an information agency arranges meetings on the condition that it will introduce you to men with certain criteria a few times.
Have you ever thought about trying this service?
Yes, I've tried it once.
So how was the result?
It wasn't good.
A failure, a failure.
Why was it a failure?
Well, whether it's through a marriage agency or just an ordinary blind date, I think it's the same.
Because it just wasn't meant to be.
Why are there so many marriage agencies in Korea?
Probably because there's a pressure that you have to get married once you reach a certain age, isn't it?
And when that pressure is effectively accepted unconsciously, I think it comes across as something you naturally have to do, as a sense of duty.
From what I've heard, I saw with my friend that once you pass twenty-six, your value keeps dropping.
Twenty-six?
네.
Yes.
So in the marriage market too, after a woman graduates from university, her value gradually drops a lot.
Probably, from what I know, if you're over thirty your value drops a lot.
Ah, I see.
네.
Yes.
How do you feel, being right on the verge of your thirties?
About these things, I mean.
I think I shouldn't do it.
Ah, I'm not going to do it.
네.
Yes.
People around you go on blind dates, use marriage agencies, or actually use matchmaking, and the difference is whether it's a service company or a person.
I think there's no need to look at it too negatively.
What do you call it when that gets used badly?
As a Korean woman, how do you think Korean society should develop and change?
음.
Um.
As a woman, I hope people won't define me.
Whether Korean women or Korean men, we're equally Korean, so I think there's no need for such biased thinking.
Probably the idea that you absolutely have to get married.
That if a woman doesn't marry, her life is over.
I hope this kind of perception changes a lot.
Living alone is cool too.
That's true.
네.
Yes.
Life ending, really?
Since there are many such perceptions, it's really cool to live alone too.
That woman lives happily alone, enjoying her life.
I want to hear words like that.

Still, that's a ten-year difference.
Why is there such a difference?
I think my parents' generation didn't have much ambition for their own dreams.
But they were a generation with a lot of responsibility, so to protect that,
가정을 더 우선시하고 자기의 꿈은 뭐 나중에 이렇게 생각하는 경향이 있었는데they put family first and tended to think of their own dreams as something for later.
I think a gold miss is someone who doesn't necessarily build a family, but lives alone and enjoys her life if she has her own ability.
I'm currently in a doctoral program.
So if I'm not careful, I could become a gold miss too; I'm exactly that target.
Isn't that what a gold miss is?
So, a woman past her mid-thirties, with what's called a stable, good job,
이제 충분히 자기 생활을 영위하면서 결혼은 하지 않은 그런 여자분들을 보통 골드미스라고 하는 것 같아요.who can support her own life well and hasn't married, is generally what people call a gold miss, I think.
It's cool.
I think she's like a career woman, loves herself, knows herself well, and enjoys her own lifestyle,
저는 굉장히 좋아해요.so I like it a lot.
Now, in Korea you can see a lot of marriage agency billboards.
For our overseas viewers, could you explain what a marriage agency is and how it operates?
네.Yes.
First of all, in Korea there aren't many opportunities for men and women to meet and mingle.
Compared to abroad.
At least in my experience.
Because of that, there are parents who gradually get older and worry about their children's marriage,
사람풀.and, half by choice and half not, their personal details and information get registered, like in a talent pool, a people pool.
Twenty-six?
네.Yes.
So in the marriage market too, after a woman graduates from university, her value gradually drops a lot.
Probably, from what I know, if you're over thirty your value drops a lot.
Ah, I see.
네.Yes.
How do you feel, being right on the verge of your thirties?
About these things, I mean.
I think I shouldn't do it.
Ah, I'm not going to do it.
네.Yes.
People around you go on blind dates, use marriage agencies, or actually use matchmaking, and the difference is whether it's a service company or a person.
I think there's no need to look at it too negatively.
What do you call it when that gets used badly?
As a Korean woman, how do you think Korean society should develop and change?
As a woman, I hope people won't define me.
Whether Korean women or Korean men, we're equally Korean, so I think there's no need for such biased thinking.
Probably the idea that you absolutely have to get married.
That if a woman doesn't marry, her life is over.
I hope this kind of perception changes a lot.
Living alone is cool too.
That's true.
네.Yes.
Life ending, really?
Since there are many such perceptions, it's really cool to live alone too.
That woman lives happily alone, enjoying her life.
I want to hear words like that.
