This is Yamaga from Daily WiLL.
Today we have as our guest journalist and professor at Reisawa University's Faculty of International Studies, Mr. Yutaka Sasaki.
Thank you for having me.
Thank you.
Yes, this is urgent, so we're rolling the camera.
That's because last night the Nikkei published an article like this, titled 'Letter of protest to Nikkei journalist'.
Concerning a video distribution.
On the 8th, Nikkei said that a video contrary to the truth had been distributed on the YouTube program run by journalist Shinichiro Suda,
and sent a letter of protest to him.
And so, this person, Mr. Suda, right.
Mr. Suda claims that in a video he streamed in August, Nikkei's editor-in-chief declared inside the company that Takaichi had won the election.
The letter of protest points out that the editor-in-chief never declared her a projected winner or made any remarks denying the Takaichi administration itself.
It said this could only be seen as damaging Nikkei's honor, and demanded that Mr. Suda take down the related video.
So, Mr. Sasada, you have appeared on this DAILY WiLL show too, and on WiLL as well,
you have appeared often on WiLL, but...
Mr. Sasaki, on this DAILY WiLL, was it not an appearance, but when it was a live broadcast, I wonder.
Also, they're putting out the same content in this clipped video, you know.
I heard it myself too, you see.
With my own ears.
That editorial bureau chief and those editorial executives, a sure win,
it does reach my ears that they said things like 'we have to topple Takaichi',
this, you know.
After all, what the Nikkei has written all along, for ten, twenty years,
given that it has appealed for the importance of austerity and fiscal discipline,
if it accepts what Ms. Takaichi calls responsible expansionary fiscal policy,
after they themselves said it and accepted it, and what's more, if the economy recovers and take-home pay rises,
the public would be happy, but the Nikkei...
As a newspaper, we'd end up proving that what we've been saying is wrong, so they've actually written in their editorials that they absolutely can't accept what Takaichi is saying, right?
We're recording this urgently today, you see.
So, as for what kind of editorial headlines they ran with...
I can't present the details here, but...
Well, if you just search on Google, it comes right up.
However you look at it, they haven't written 'projected winner,' but...
Takaichi, uh, what was it called... it's not quite 'a gentleman changes his stripes,' but still.
They were urging, 'You can change it right away after all,' weren't they?
By changing the policy.
Nikkei... well, we also subscribe to it as a company, yes.
Well, in some article somewhere they're sure to say it's Takaichi's responsibility, her proactive fiscal policy, and so on,
and there are definitely critical pieces about things like the relationship with the Bank of Japan,
and there's even an impression that it's nothing but that.
There has never been any statement denying the victory declaration or the Takaichi administration itself.
But isn't Takaichi's economic policy, Sanaenomics, something like the Takaichi administration itself?
I've already denied that, and actually in the paper too.
And, is that not effectively a declaration of a projected win?
Well, judging from the editorial, they do seem to be on the same side as a projected win.
Also, as expected, someone at the company, an executive, here that is, said something close to that declaration of a projected win.
According to reports, it was the editor-in-chief who said it, but...
Since there is a person who says they heard it, that is easy to prove, but...
Conversely, from Nikkei's standpoint, it is not exactly proving a devil, but...
Proving that something was not said is quite difficult to do.
Well, in a meeting where everyone had gathered, in a really ordinary setting,
setting aside whether he said "We'll topple the Takaichi administration, and we'll shape the paper's coverage to do it,"
if the bureau chief, in ordinary conversation, gathered the desk editors or the department heads and, in some off-the-record chat,
hinted at something along those lines, that would be a bit weak.
In Nikkei's own terms too.
Certainly, even we wouldn't force Nikkei into proving a negative, but
however you look at it, judging by how the paper is put together now, it can't be helped if it's seen that way, or rather,
the surrounding situation, you might say.
That's tough, isn't it.
And then they tell us, "Well, you prove it, then."
In this case, for example, we're protesting to people like Mr. Suda, but
from Mr. Suda's standpoint, he's a journalist after all, so
there's no need to say who he heard it from, and no need to disclose that memo either.
That has already been recognized by the Supreme Court.
Because protecting the confidentiality of one's sources is the most important thing.
If you did that, it would be the end.
Because it would mean no reporting could be done at all,
this puts Nikkei Shimbun at a disadvantage, first of all.
The second point is that I'm in a somewhat awkward position, but...
I think, you know, that Nikkei Shimbun has probably had the rug pulled out from under it by the Ministry of Finance.
These senior bureaucrats, these officials, are quick to sense an opportunity.
They sway toward whichever side is stronger.
That's because the essence of a bureaucrat lies in the organization's self-expansion and self-preservation.
In fact, wasn't Mr. Unami smoothly promoted to vice-minister straight from bureau chief?
So, as for this one, there's Mr. Matsu,
an excellent subordinate, the kind said to appear once in ten years, whom they handed over in a way like this,
well, whether they'd return him later or whether there was a secret deal aside, the Tokyo Customs chief...
Well, recently I was told that this unprecedented personnel move is a kind of card play, wasn't it.
That means I naturally think there must be some part where Unami and Takaichi are connected, don't you think?
So, isn't it that they don't appear in that kind of log?
When Unami was bureau chief, he came to Takaichi's place again and again,
but since around February or March this year, he has completely stopped coming.
That means, everyone wonders whether they've become estranged, but that's not it.
The Prime Minister's Official Residence has three entrances at the very least, and one of them is the service gate.
If you go in through the front, onto the floor, I think many of you have seen this,
there are loads of first-year reporters from the media, all thrusting their mics at people.
They go up in the elevator, come back down, and (ask), "Who did you meet?"
(They say) "I didn't meet anyone," you know.
I suppose there's no need to say so, but...
So, to tell the truth, over toward Tameike there's an entrance that people don't know about,
and long ago there was an episode about Masayoshi Ohira's ghost appearing there.
There's a back door like that which nobody knows about,
the Tameiguchi, the Tameike entrance, and there are plenty of eyewitness reports of people going in from there.
Takaichi and the Finance Ministry's top official have fully coordinated, and while they've actually secured funding too,
the opposition and the LDP too keep demanding 'show us the funding source, the funding source.'
Mr. Zaisei Kiritsu (the fiscal hawks) are saying it too, but since this is a card, there's no need to show their hand right away.
Takaichi is pretending to be in trouble, but actually she has been saving up and holding resources, you know.
And so Nikkei thought this was the chance to attack.
On top of that, the editorial writers at Sankei, who watch Nikkei, got dragged along too, desperately going on about fiscal discipline, fiscal discipline.
So they're saying things like stock prices and the market, right?
Takaichi, the Ministry of Finance and Mr. Unami are carrying out that joint 'knife' business, so...
I think the Nikkei has had the ladder pulled out from under it by the Ministry of Finance.
You could say the Ministry of Finance has the upper hand, in terms of position too.
When we deal with it, the Nikkei is said to be doing the Ministry of Finance's bidding, a mouthpiece for the Ministry of Finance or the BOJ.
They get information from there and have it leaked, for example leaks about a rate hike.
So Nikkei has been landing scoops, hasn't it?
In that sense, since their position is now tied to the Ministry of Finance,
when they can use it and think this is bad for the Takaichi administration, they use Nikkei,
but if they say this will be a long-term administration, then they have to face Takaichi's way, so
it's quite possible that the ladder gets taken away from them.
And the third point that made me think "huh?" is,
this major newspaper, Nikkei and the like, while the whole industry is said to be in decline,
is that only Nikkei and Yomiuri are said to be the ones that will survive.
Indeed, I hear there are people who quit other newspapers and even join Nikkei as mid-career hires.
There are quite a lot of them.
In fact, the story is that they're recruiting with high-paying offers.
That's how it was, wasn't it.
Like, they'd raise your pay by a million yen, in a 'come on over' sort of way.
Everyone gathers right away, you see.
Especially news agencies at the level of Jiji Press and Kyodo News have become poaching grounds, and people apparently go to places like Nikkei, but,
that same Nikkei, one journalist—I remembered the term 'SLAPP lawsuit', but—
I wonder whether they'd go out of their way to single us out like this and protest.
It's rude to Mr. Suda, but since I'm freelance now, let me be frank: they don't take it seriously.
Normally they say, 'Don't waste your time on it.'
It was the same when I was at the Sankei Shimbun.
It was like, 'just let them say what they want.'
And in this monthly WiLL there's also the familiar Masayuki Takayama.
I've actually asked, 'Is it really okay to write that much badmouthing about the Asahi Shimbun?'
I asked because he's a senior colleague from the company.
According to what Takayama heard from an acquaintance at the Asahi Shimbun,
inside Asahi they say not to touch Takayama, because it's just a hassle.
Apparently the word was to just leave it alone, but...
In Mr. Suga's case, the fact that they aren't going that far means Nikkei itself is quite anxious.
I do think they're anxious.
And so I think this might end up in tatters, that's what I think.
And with the news about Mr. Suga coming out,
we're doing an emergency recording of this on Daily WiLL too.
And as for the situation inside Nikkei, what I happened to overhear was
that, starting with Mr. Suga and the like, and Daily too is the same,
the idea that Nikkei is now fully turning against Takaichi is spreading, and
or rather, that's actually the case, so the paper's page-making...
Sensible readers are drifting away, they say.
And circulation has started to fall too.
A boycott movement is happening, they say.
This is happening on social media too.
As for inside the company, what about this anti-Takaichi policy...
...in terms of Mr. Suga, this editor-in-chief's editorial policy, or rather the voices of dissatisfaction with his stance,
it may not be internal strife, but one can imagine there is some turmoil.
It's what you'd call impatience, a complex set of reasons.
And in Nikkei's editorials too, they urge Takaichi to change her mind, but the one who should change their mind is Nikkei itself, isn't it?
Enough already — lower the flag!
How much have they made the people suffer? Do they even understand that position?
From a safe place, they support immigration and show off a tolerant stance, don't they.
They give off the same smell as the so-called elites of Europe.
They themselves are well off, after all.
Whether the people's consumption tax goes up or down a bit, it has nothing to do with them.
To tell the truth, it's about the level of Nikkei's high earners.
Do they really understand the pain?
And so, on that point, they join forces with the Ministry of Finance.
This is because it's political maneuvering.
As for the 'political situation', it's the phase of a political power struggle,
I keep saying this, but they're already engaged in a power struggle,
and I understand that a fist already raised can't be swung down at this point, but
I think it's the Nikkei that ought to repent.
The Nikkei has, until now, long cast Abenomics and its proactive, responsible fiscal policy as something to be denied,
and things like fiscal reconstruction, fiscal discipline and the primary balance were broken through by Mr. Kishi's robust basic policy.
Recently, using Bessent's remarks and quoting them, they ask 'Minister Katayama, is that right?' and are trying to drive a wedge between Mr. Kishi and Ms. Takaichi.
And so, to Ms. Katayama, well, she isn't one to give in to Bessent's pressure, but...
...they get her to make remarks that sort of take that into account, so it's what you'd call crushing the reflationists, isn't it?
And they're trying to crush Abenomics and Sanaenomics,
and this is where we want to sound the alarm, right?
これね。
This, you see.
That's right.
So they may intend to be talking seriously about fiscal policy, Nikkei Shimbun, but...
...what they're actually doing is, well, this is a fight.
Because it's a political power struggle.
If total amateurs at political maneuvering meddle in it,
you'll get hurt, I tell you.
Truly.
I'm warning you about this, from me.
Because this matter, what we call this matter, is the one in which Mr. Suda was singled out,
and the counterattack of the reflation camp has started right now, so it's scary.
It's scary, I tell you.
LDP lawmakers are very skilled hands, after all.
I think you'd do well to be careful on that point, truly.
Really.
This is exactly a case of stirring up trouble for yourself.
And while we're at it, shall I say this too?
This Nikkei company, this is September 15th, a story from last month, but
it announced that it had been padding the ad fees it billed for the advertising booklet, Nikkei Magazine, inserted into and distributed with the morning paper.
This is something that should get talked about more, I think,
but the Asahi Shimbun has run a story on it.
It inflated the circulation figures that advertising rates are based on, by roughly 15,000 to 250,000 copies over the real numbers,
and two advertisers each improperly received tens of millions of yen.
This is fraud, isn't it?
It's fraud, this is.
Fraud is a serious crime.
Because there's no suspended sentence.
Excuses like "I had no intention of deceiving anyone" won't work, you know.
This is a serious matter.
Because it isn't at the level of an editorial bureau chief or editorial executive, or an editorial-board executive.
Since this is a matter of management.
It's about management executives, so the investigators will surely move now.
This is a case of lizard-tail cutting, isn't it.
Maybe it goes down to section-chief level or so, I don't know, but it's not as if they'd just let me get caught.
It's not over, this.
If it comes to that, other newspaper companies are mostly doing it too, and it could spread, so you'd better see it that way.
I think that kind of padded-circulation talk, showing a larger circulation for ad fees, exists at any newspaper company.
Amid all this, well, if Nikkei keeps reporting from such a heavily biased stance, as if it were anti-Takaichi,
it can't avoid a sharp drop in circulation either, and there's the question of what they think about that.
And inside Nikkei, surely there are sensible reporters on the ground, so there are people like that.
I know that, you see.
That includes what thoughts the editorial director and editorial executives hold, and whether it's an environment where they can say so openly inside the company.
Going forward, there's a possibility that this kind of infighting talk will come out again.
So, really, it's the political reporters who only know who pushed or backed off in the political fray, and who don't understand policy, who are the very ones who should...
...be socializing with the senior officials at the Ministry of Finance.
It's better to have kept up those ties.
That includes my own self-reflection.
I'd say I studied economics through that.
The economics-desk reporters who say 'this is the Finance Research Group'...
...say they can't go toe-to-toe with Ministry of Finance executives, which is completely off the mark.
Ministry of Finance executives understand that, and they play political games, so they will far more readily swap out the prime minister without a second thought.
The Ministry of Finance is full of that kind of people, so there's a chance of being left hanging, you know.
This video too, there's a chance Nikkei people are watching it, so please do pass it on to the editor-in-chief,

Thank you for your work today, Yamane-san.
Thank you for your hard work.
What I'd like to introduce today is wind and snow; you've probably never seen it before, but...
This is this product.
It looks like you bought something.
You're half right.
Oh, I see.
The product name is the Emergency Tool, a JIS-compliant product, and
I thought it might be something very necessary given the situation these days.
Speaking of these days…
There has been extremely heavy rain, especially around Chiba Prefecture, with footage of cars stopping and the like.
I think there is also some footage of flooded areas.
Cars have also been submerged and so on.
はい。
Yes.
This product here is for the unlikely event of an accident, submersion and the like.
It is an emergency escape support tool for cars, to get out of the vehicle quickly.
It is quite a pinpoint solution, but one thing shows the whole picture.
Recently we often hear that kind of news, so
this is a situation you must not underestimate, this is...
Yes, could you open it a little and hold it for me?
Yes. It opens easily. Yes, this is it.
And the part you're gripping with your hand right now becomes the handle.
And you're sitting in it, right? The seatbelt.
And I think there's a V-shaped cut where you just pinched it,
and there's a blade there, so it slices cleanly.
Like this? Yes, exactly.
Of course a seatbelt has to be sturdy or it's no good,
but if that sturdiness gets locked in place, it could backfire, or rather...
はい。
Yes.
Besides, taking this off can make it rattle, and you might panic, things like that can happen, but...
With this type, it's designed so that you can intuitively smash it with one hit.
And the hard part on top is the hammer.
The hammer. Yes.
The door not opening is something that often happens when the car is half submerged in water, but...
At that point, you can break the glass from inside or outside and escape.
Sure, a hammer gives a heavy impression, but this one is not heavy at all.
It's like this, though — the damage is huge.
So even though this is light, it now breaks with a minimal amount of force.
This, probably.
That's exactly right.
I think even women and children could probably apply the force easily.
はい。
Yes.

And, of course, it's made in Japan, yes.
So that's how it turns out.
As for this, you have to prepare one per car.
So, in the part before that, yes, yes, this, what is it...
In a door-like part... it's nice, isn't it.
If I leave it be and the crunch comes, I'll think, "Ah, I have that."
Like, "I'm glad I bought it with the legacy of winning."

That's why the price is also very reasonable. Ah, no.
That's what I was thinking, and, um.
Tax included, it comes to 2,280 yen, uh.
I'd thought it would be more expensive.
そう。
Right.
I wondered if it would be four or five thousand, but it was 2,200, yes.
Is it in the 2,000-yen range?
And if it's in the 2,000-yen range, yeah.
Well, you might not actually get a chance to use it, but, yeah.
After all, you end up thinking you'll keep one stocked, right?
Yes, in fact, if you get submerged, yes.
When even the seat belt can't be dealt with at all,
if it's in the 2,000-yen range, then so that it doesn't come to that, right.
Well then, yes.

So, Mr. Sasada, you have appeared on this DAILY WiLL show too, and on WiLL as well,
ビールでもね、度々出演されていますが、you have appeared often on WiLL, but...
Mr. Sasaki, on this DAILY WiLL, was it not an appearance, but when it was a live broadcast, I wonder.
Also, they're putting out the same content in this clipped video, you know.
I heard it myself too, you see.
With my own ears.
That editorial bureau chief and those editorial executives, a sure win,
高市は倒さないといけない的なことを話していたというのはそう、耳に入ってきますよね、it does reach my ears that they said things like 'we have to topple Takaichi',
this, you know.
After all, what the Nikkei has written all along, for ten, twenty years,
緊縮財政の大切さ、財政規律の大切さってことを訴えてきた以上ね、given that it has appealed for the importance of austerity and fiscal discipline,
これは高市さんの言っている責任ある積極財政を認めると、if it accepts what Ms. Takaichi calls responsible expansionary fiscal policy,
自分たちが言った、認めた上でね、しかも景気が回復し、手取りが増えるなんてことになれば、after they themselves said it and accepted it, and what's more, if the economy recovers and take-home pay rises,
国民は喜ぶんだけれども、日the public would be happy, but the Nikkei...
Well, in some article somewhere they're sure to say it's Takaichi's responsibility, her proactive fiscal policy, and so on,
日銀との関係とか、そういうものでもその批判的なものは絶対にありますし、and there are definitely critical pieces about things like the relationship with the Bank of Japan,
and there's even an impression that it's nothing but that.
Well, in a meeting where everyone had gathered, in a really ordinary setting,
高市政権倒すぞ、そのための紙面展開するぞって言ったかどうかは別にして、setting aside whether he said "We'll topple the Takaichi administration, and we'll shape the paper's coverage to do it,"
普段の会話でもね、デスク集めてね、あるいは各部の部長を集めて、編集局局長がね、オフレコみたいな雑談の中でね、if the bureau chief, in ordinary conversation, gathered the desk editors or the department heads and, in some off-the-record chat,
hinted at something along those lines, that would be a bit weak.
In Nikkei's own terms too.
Certainly, even we wouldn't force Nikkei into proving a negative, but
ただ、どう考えても今の紙面の作り方から言えば、それはそう思われても仕方がないというか、however you look at it, judging by how the paper is put together now, it can't be helped if it's seen that way, or rather,
the surrounding situation, you might say.
That's tough, isn't it.
And then they tell us, "Well, you prove it, then."
In this case, for example, we're protesting to people like Mr. Suda, but
須田さん的にはそれはやっぱりジャーナリストですから、from Mr.
Matsu,
十年に一人とか言われている優秀な部下、これをなんか差し出すような形でね、an excellent subordinate, the kind said to appear once in ten years, whom they handed over in a way like this,
まあ後で戻すっていうのか、密約があったかどうかは別にして、東京税関長well, whether they'd return him later or whether there was a secret deal aside, the Tokyo Customs chief...
So, to tell the truth, over toward Tameike there's an entrance that people don't know about,
昔そこに大平正芳さんのね、幽霊が出たっていうね、and long ago there was an episode about Masayoshi Ohira's ghost appearing there.
In that sense, since their position is now tied to the Ministry of Finance,
それは利用できる時は、これは高市政権まずいなと思ったら日経使いますし、when they can use it and think this is bad for the Takaichi administration, they use Nikkei,
でもこれ長期政権になるぞって言ったら、高市さんの方を向かないダメだから、but if they say this will be a long-term administration, then they have to face Takaichi's way, so
it's quite possible that the ladder gets taken away from them.
And the third point that made me think "huh?" is,
この大新聞ですよ、日経新聞なんかね、この業界全体が斜陽だと言ってる中でね、this major newspaper, Nikkei and the like, while the whole industry is said to be in decline,
is that only Nikkei and Yomiuri are said to be the ones that will survive.
Especially news agencies at the level of Jiji Press and Kyodo News have become poaching grounds, and people apparently go to places like Nikkei, but,
その日経新聞がですよ、一人のジャーナリスト、私はスラップ訴訟という言葉を思い出したんだけれども、that same Nikkei, one journalist—I remembered the term 'SLAPP lawsuit', but—
I wonder whether they'd go out of their way to single us out like this and protest.
And as for the situation inside Nikkei, what I happened to overhear was
そのこういった菅さん始め、そのデイリーもそうですけど、that, starting with Mr. Suga and the like, and Daily too is the same,
今完全に日経が反高市に舵を切ってっていうのがやっぱり広まることにより、the idea that Nikkei is now fully turning against Takaichi is spreading, and
or rather, that's actually the case, so the paper's page-making...
Sensible readers are drifting away, they say.
And circulation has started to fall too.
A boycott movement is happening, they say.
This is happening on social media too.
As for inside the company, what about this anti-Takaichi policy...
この菅さんでいうところのこの編集局長のこの編集方針、スタンスに対する不満の声というか、...in terms of Mr.
As for the 'political situation', it's the phase of a political power struggle,
I keep saying this, but they're already engaged in a power struggle,
今更上げた拳はね、振り下ろす振り下ろせないっていうのはわかるんだけれども、and I understand that a fist already raised can't be swung down at this point, but
I think it's the Nikkei that ought to repent.
これね。This, you see.
This is something that should get talked about more, I think,
これは朝日新聞が記事にしていますがbut the Asahi Shimbun has run a story on it.
This video too, there's a chance Nikkei people are watching it, so please do pass it on to the editor-in-chief,
and if there's anything problematic in this content, I'd appreciate it if you sent a letter of protest to the editorial department.
Also, if I go missing after this, please look for me.
Please look for me.
When I say something daring like "don't look for me,"
it's a ploy to get you to forget about it, but this time, please look for me.
Please look for it.
You might even find them in a bar nearby, surprisingly.
The signal didn't reach underground, though.
We're looking forward to it.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
はい。Yes.
はい。Yes.
はい。Yes.
Now, products like this undergo quite strict screening, yes.
This product, set by the country with strict standards, uh, apparently JIS D5716, yes.
Uh, apparently it's JIS D5716, yes.
After clearing that, in 2020 this shape became the basic-function type, yes, uh-huh.
It's a product that has obtained JIS certification for the first time, yes.
That's what it means.
Yes.
はい。Yes.
And, of course, strength, and impact resistance.
うん。Mm-hm.
And, versus, for times when it's cold or hot like that, yes.
Durability too has been proven, yes.
Very high quality, hmm.
Well, it has reliability.
はい。Yes.
I'd rather that time not come, but if it does come, yes.
It's precisely for preparation.
It's preparation.
It's for preparing for when the time comes.
It's preparation.
That's why the price is also very reasonable. Ah, no.
That's what I was thinking, and, um.
Tax included, it comes to 2,280 yen, uh.
I'd thought it would be more expensive.
そう。Right.
As always, the purchase site for this emergency tool, the JIS-compliant product, yes.
I'll put it in the description box. Yes.
