Hi everyone, Yeji here.
So we're going to do a street interview today.
And I'm going to ask a lot of local Koreans this question.
Is it easy or difficult to live in Korea without knowing much Korean?
What do Korean people think and what do you think?
Let's find out.
Well, these days there are a lot of foreigners coming to Korea to travel, aren't there?
But if someone comes to travel without knowing any Korean at all, would it be a bit hard to travel in Korea?
Still, if they use things like a translator, wouldn't they be able to manage fine?
And in the case of Koreans, English education is well established, so I think it's more convenient than in other countries.
But I think it would help more to come knowing a few words needed for the subway and daily life.
Not all Koreans speak English well, so, well,
even if they study it, they don't tend to do much conversation, so I think it's a bit hard.
But in Seoul, for example, many ordinary restaurants and large convenience facilities support English, Chinese, even Japanese,
so on the surface it looks really easy to travel.
But if you want to talk directly with Koreans like us, I think there would probably be difficulties.
In that case, when living in Korea, can you live without knowing any Korean, or not? What do you think?
Uh, I think you can live there.
Because they say learning a language locally is the fastest way.
So I also have the experience of going to Germany to study the language.
So even if you don't know it at all, I think learning by throwing yourself into it is the fastest way to pick it up, but on the other hand, I also think another thing.
Even if you don't speak Korean fluently, I think it's good to learn enough to be able to communicate to some degree.
I think it's probably similar to living in the US without knowing English.
Since it's a country where mainly Korean is used, wouldn't using Korean be more helpful than using your own language?
Have you felt that the number of foreigners learning Korean has increased lately?
I watch a lot of travel YouTubers, and there are quite a lot of people who greet you in Korean first.
So seeing that, I felt like, 'Wow, people really are learning a lot of Korean.'
I don't really notice it around me, but when I see what comes out in the media, it seems quite a lot of people know at least basic Korean.
When I look at things like YouTube, even on Korean channels, in the translated-style posts and comments, I think, 'Wow, they use a lot of Korean.'
I haven't yet encountered it in real life.
I just saw that the number of foreigners learning Korean is growing on internet media.
But I haven't personally felt it yet.
By any chance, what do you think is making more people learn Korean?
Squid Game.
Squid Game?
Um, probably because of idols and K-pop stars, don't you think Korea has become widely known?
People like BTS and Blackpink are promoting Korea so much, aren't they?
If you have a foreign friend coming to Korea, which city would you want to take them to?
You know, something where you can really see Korea's character, something you can't see if you go abroad.
Something where you can experience traditional Korean culture, and Korean vibes, you know.
Like a snack bar (bunsik place).
Ah, I think that kind of thing is good.
Like, going to see the Namsan night view or hiking Eungbongsan.
Ah, hiking. Korea has lots of mountains, right?
Yes. The mountains are low, so they're easy to climb, and the night view there is pretty.
I'd recommend Gwanghwamun.
If you come to Gwanghwamun, I think it's probably the place where you can see both past and present Korean culture at once.
When you come to Korea, Seoul is the first priority.
But if you really want to get to know Korea, I think going to Busan is good too.
So I recommend Busan.
Actually, I'd like to recommend Incheon.
Ah, Incheon and Busan. You two both like the sea side, I see.
I think Incheon is a really good place to live.
The mountains are close, the sea is close, and Songdo's Central Park is really well made.
You can ride a boat there, hang out a bit, and it's close to Yeongjongdo too.
Yes. You take the Incheon Bridge, cross over to Yeongjongdo, watch the sunset, and there are good restaurants on Yeongjongdo.
Since I'm from Yeongjongdo.
When they come to Seoul or to Korea, they always stop by Hongdae.
But I'd like them to feel a more tranquil, calmer Korean atmosphere than Hongdae's,
so my hope is that they'd go to areas nearby like Yeonhui-dong, or Seongsu-dong, or Bukchon.
I too, rather than Hongdae, would like to go toward Gyeongbokgung to see our traditional buildings,
or, even if it's not Seoul, go to a place like Jecheon with a lively regional festival and enjoy it.
