Hello everyone, I'm Mia, and today I want to tell you something that happened to me a few years ago.

A story that still makes me smile today, but that at the time made me quite anxious.

It's the story of the time I got lost in the subway for the first time in my life.

If it has never happened to you, maybe you won't immediately understand what I'm talking about.

Ma se invece avete vissuto qualcosa di simile, so già che state annuendo in questo momento.

But if you have been through something similar, I already know you're nodding right now.

That feeling of looking around you and not recognizing anything.

That little voice in your head that says: "Um, where exactly am I?"

It was September, one of those late-summer days when the sky is still blue,

but the air starts to change, to get cooler in the morning.

Ero appena arrivata in una città nuova per me: Milano.

I had just arrived in a city that was new to me: Milan.

Non c'ero mai stata da sola.

I had never been there on my own.

I had always traveled with my family or with my friends,

and someone else always took care of organizing everything: the tickets, the route, the directions.

Ma quella volta ero sola, completamente sola.

But this time I was alone, completely alone.

I had an important appointment in the afternoon, on the other side of the city.

I had looked up the route on my phone the evening before,

avevo preso nota della linea giusta, della direzione, della fermata esatta.

I had taken note of the right line, the direction, the exact stop.

I had even written everything down on a little slip of paper, the way people used to, just to be safe.

Ero preparata, o almeno così credevo.

I was prepared, or at least so I thought.

Il primo errore l'ho fatto già all'inizio.

I made my first mistake right at the start.

I walked into the station with total confidence.

I bought the ticket at the machine and went through the turnstiles with a satisfied click,

and then I found myself in front of two escalators, one on the right, one on the left.

Above each one there was a sign with the name of a direction, and I had no idea which one to take.

Ho guardato il telefono.

I looked at my phone.

La connessione era pessima, come spesso succede sottoterra.

The connection was terrible, as often happens underground.

The map would load halfway, then freeze, then restart from the beginning.

Ho aspettato un minuto, poi due.

I waited a minute, then two.

Niente.

Nothing.

I decided to do what everyone does in these situations when they don't know what to do: I followed the crowd.

Too bad the crowd that morning was going in exactly the wrong direction.

Mi sono ritrovata su un treno già in movimento.

I found myself on a train that was already moving.

Il treno era partito.

The train had left.

I was looking out of the window and I realized, slowly and with growing worry,

that the names of the stops scrolling by on the electronic display

didn't match anything at all of what I had studied the evening before.

Linea sbagliata, direzione sbagliata, fermata sbagliata, tutto sbagliato.

Wrong line, wrong direction, wrong stop, everything wrong.

I tried to stay calm and told myself:

"All right, Mia, it's not the end of the world.

Get off at the next stop, look at the map and start over."

Semplice, no?

Simple, right?

In teoria sì.

In theory, yes.

In practice, when you're underground in a city you don't know,

when your phone has little battery and even less signal, everything seems a bit more complicated than expected.

Sono scesa alla fermata successiva.

I got off at the next stop.

The name was, wait, let me remember it properly: Porta Romana.

Ok, Porta Romana.

Okay, Porta Romana.

Non sapevo dove fosse Porta Romana.

I didn't know where Porta Romana was.

I didn't know how far I was from my original destination.

I didn't even know for certain which stop I had started from,

because the entrance station had a long name that I had already forgotten.

I stopped in the middle of the platform, with my suitcase next to my feet.

Around me everyone was moving fast, with that automatic confidence of someone who knows every corner of that city,

of someone who takes that route every day for years.

Persone con le cuffiette nelle orecchie,

People with earbuds in their ears,

people with a coffee in hand bought who knows where,

people with a newspaper under their arm and their gaze already fixed on the next thing to do.

And then there was me, with my small trolley, my phone almost dead,

my useless slip of paper and the face of someone who is clearly, unmistakably lost.

Avete mai provato quella sensazione specifica?

Have you ever had that specific feeling?

When you are in the middle of lots of people, surrounded by movement and noise and life,

but you feel completely alone with your problem?

Ho respirato lentamente.

I breathed slowly.

Ho cercato un cartello utile.

I looked for a useful sign.

Ne ho trovati tanti, forse troppi.

I found plenty of them, maybe too many.

Linea gialla, linea rossa, linea verde, uscite numerate, indicazioni per cambi, frecce che puntavano in ogni direzione.

Yellow line, red line, green line, numbered exits, directions for transfers, arrows pointing in every direction.

Le informazioni erano tutte lì, scritte chiaramente,

The information was all there, clearly written,

ma il mio cervello in quel momento faceva fatica a elaborarle in modo ordinato.

but my brain at that moment was struggling to process it in an orderly way.

È una cosa strana questa,

It's a strange thing, this,

come quando guardi una parola troppe volte

like when you look at a word too many times

and suddenly it no longer seems like a real word, but just a set of letters without meaning.

Then I did something I should have done right away,

ma che per qualche ragione avevo evitato:

but which for some reason I had avoided:

ho chiesto aiuto.

I asked for help.

There was a woman sitting on a small metal bench near the platform.

She had a large canvas bag, a newspaper open on her knees, and a calm, rested face.

The kind of person who always seems to know exactly where she is and where she is going.

I approached her with my best Italian, the slightly formal and careful kind,

that you use when you talk to someone you don't know and you want to make a good impression.

E le ho detto: "Scusi, mi sa dire come arrivare a Cadorna?

And I said to her: "Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to Cadorna?

Mi sono un po' persa."

I'm a bit lost."

The lady raised her eyes from her newspaper, looked at me for a second, sizing me up, and then smiled.

Not a condescending smile, not one of those that seem to say:

"Ma come fai a non saperlo? È così semplice."

"Come on, how can you not know? It's so simple."

A genuine, open, kind smile, one of those that immediately melt

a bit of the tension you've built up in your shoulders without even realizing it.

Mi ha spiegato tutto con molta calma, indicando i cartelli mentre parlava.

She explained everything to me very calmly, pointing at the signs as she spoke.

Dovevo prendere la linea verde in direzione nord,

I had to take the green line in the direction of north,

ride exactly two stops, get off at a certain station and then take the red line for two more stops.

Semplice, diretto, chiaro.

Simple, direct, clear.

Era più facile di quanto pensassi.

It was easier than I had thought.

But without her I would probably have kept going around in circles

for who knows how long, losing my sense of direction and maybe even my afternoon appointment.

I thanked her warmly, perhaps with a bit too much enthusiasm.

She made a small gesture with her hand, one of those Italian gestures that are worth a thousand words,

as if to say: "Don't mention it, it's nothing, you're welcome," and calmly went back to reading her newspaper.

That small thing, that moment of spontaneous kindness from a complete stranger,

completely changed my mood within thirty seconds.

I got back on the train with a completely different energy.

I still felt a bit dazed, sure, but also something much lighter in my chest,

as if the city had suddenly decided to stop being an enemy and to become, at least a little, a welcoming place.

I did the two stops on the green line, then I changed.

I did the two stops on the red line.

I checked the display every time the voice announced the next stop.

And in the end, after about 40 minutes of a totally unplanned adventure, I arrived at Cadorna.

When I came out of the subway and felt the open air again,

when I saw the September sunlight on the facades of the buildings around me,

I did something a bit funny: I laughed.

Alone, in the middle of the people walking fast on the sidewalk,

with my rolling suitcase in one hand and my almost dead phone in the other.

Ridevo perché era finita, perché ero arrivata,

I laughed because it was over, because I had arrived,

because all that anxiety and confusion had turned into something light and almost funny.

And walking toward my appointment, I understood something important:

getting lost is not always a disaster, it is not always a failure or something to be ashamed of.

Sometimes getting lost is just a different, less direct way of getting to know a place.

Ho visto Porta Romana.

I saw Porta Romana.

I hadn't planned it into my day, it wasn't on my list,

I didn't even know it existed before that day, but it was beautiful.

There were buildings with ochre and brick-colored facades,

a small market on one side of the square with the fruit neatly arranged,

people drinking coffee seated outside a café with painted wooden chairs.

A piece of Milan that I would never have seen if everything had gone according to plan.

Pensate per un momento alla vostra vita.

Think about your own life for a moment.

Quante volte vi siete persi, in senso letterale come me in quella metropolitana, oppure in senso più ampio nella vita quotidiana,

How many times have you gotten lost, literally like me in that subway, or in a broader sense in everyday life,

and that loss turned into something unexpected but positive?

An encounter, a discovery, an experience that you would never have had if you had followed the predetermined route.

After that Milan experience, I learned a few practical things about the subway that I would like to share with you

because they can be really useful if you travel or if you are learning to get around an Italian city for the first time.

Prima cosa: preparatevi prima di uscire di casa.

First thing: get ready before leaving the house.

When you still have a good internet connection and your brain works well because you are not yet in the middle of the chaos.

Look at the map, trace your route, and if you can, download the map offline onto your phone.

Those few minutes of preparation are worth much more than they seem.

Seconda cosa, e questa è importante:

Second thing, and this one is important:

always look for the final destination of the train, not just the number or the color of the line.

On Italian subway platforms, the name of the last stop of the route is usually written.

Se sapete verso quale fermata finale state andando, potete capire subito se il treno è quello giusto oppure no.

If you know which final stop you're heading toward, you can tell right away whether it's the right train or not.

It's the surest way not to go in the wrong direction.

Third thing, and maybe the most important of all: don't be afraid to ask.

I know it seems obvious, I know that sometimes people hesitate out of shyness or so as not to disturb anyone,

but people, the vast majority of the time, are kind and helpful.

That lady with the newspaper helped me in less than 30 seconds.

Those 30 seconds saved me maybe half an hour of confusion and wandering aimlessly.

Don't be afraid of your question; whoever knows gladly helps.

Sono tornata a Milano qualche mese dopo, in inverno quella volta,

I went back to Milan a few months later, in winter that time,

and the subway didn't scare me at all.

Sapevo già dove guardare, sapevo come leggere i cartelli,

I already knew where to look, I knew how to read the signs,

I knew that if I got lost again I could ask for help without any problem.

The city was no longer an unfamiliar and slightly hostile place; it had become something familiar, almost mine.

It's strange how this mechanism of familiarity works, isn't it?

La prima volta tutto sembra enorme e complicato.

The first time, everything seems huge and complicated.

The second time, it already seems much less difficult than you remembered.

And the third time, you move around naturally, as if you had always been there,

as if that city had always been part of your life.

Mi piacerebbe tanto sapere:

I would really love to know:

have you ever happened to get lost in a foreign city or in a completely new place?

Come vi siete sentiti in quel momento?

How did you feel at that moment?

Did you ask for help, or did you try to manage on your own?

Can you tell me about it in the comments below?

I love reading your experiences, really, with all my heart.

Choosing to learn a language by listening to stories told in a natural way

is one of the most effective and enjoyable methods there are.

Your brain works differently compared to when you study grammar from a book.

It absorbs the rhythm of the language, words in their contexts, structures in everyday situations,

senza che dobbiate memorizzare regole a memoria.

without you having to memorize rules by heart.

It's a slower path, perhaps, but a much more solid one.

Continuate così, ne vale davvero la pena.

Keep going like this, it's really worth it.

persone con il giornale sotto il braccio e lo sguardo già proiettato sulla prossima cosa da fare.people with a newspaper under their arm and their gaze already fixed on the next thing to do.

E poi c'ero io, con il mio trolley piccolo, il mio telefono quasi scarico,And then there was me, with my small trolley, my phone almost dead,

il mio foglietto di carta inutile e la faccia di chi è chiaramente, inequivocabilmente perduto.my useless slip of paper and the face of someone who is clearly, unmistakably lost.

Avete mai provato quella sensazione specifica?Have you ever had that specific feeling?

Quando siete in mezzo a tante persone, circondati da movimento e rumore e vita,When you are in the middle of lots of people, surrounded by movement and noise and life,

ma vi sentite completamente sole con il vostro problema?but you feel completely alone with your problem?

Ho respirato lentamente.I breathed slowly.

Ho cercato un cartello utile.I looked for a useful sign.

Ne ho trovati tanti, forse troppi.I found plenty of them, maybe too many.

Linea gialla, linea rossa, linea verde, uscite numerate, indicazioni per cambi, frecce che puntavano in ogni direzione.Yellow line, red line, green line, numbered exits, directions for transfers, arrows pointing in every direction.

Le informazioni erano tutte lì, scritte chiaramente,The information was all there, clearly written,

ma il mio cervello in quel momento faceva fatica a elaborarle in modo ordinato.but my brain at that moment was struggling to process it in an orderly way.

È una cosa strana questa,It's a strange thing, this,

come quando guardi una parola troppe voltelike when you look at a word too many times

e all'improvviso non sembra più una parola vera, ma solo un insieme di lettere senza senso.and suddenly it no longer seems like a real word, but just a set of letters without meaning.

Then I did something I should have done right away,

ma che per qualche ragione avevo evitato:but which for some reason I had avoided:

ho chiesto aiuto.I asked for help.

There was a woman sitting on a small metal bench near the platform.

She had a large canvas bag, a newspaper open on her knees, and a calm, rested face.

The kind of person who always seems to know exactly where she is and where she is going.

L'ho avvicinata con il mio italiano migliore, quello un po' formale e attento,I approached her with my best Italian, the slightly formal and careful kind,

che usi quando parli con qualcuno che non conosci e vuoi fare una buona impressione.that you use when you talk to someone you don't know and you want to make a good impression.

E le ho detto: "Scusi, mi sa dire come arrivare a Cadorna? And I said to her: "Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to Cadorna?

The lady raised her eyes from her newspaper, looked at me for a second, sizing me up, and then smiled.

Not a condescending smile, not one of those that seem to say:

"Ma come fai a non saperlo? È così semplice.""Come on, how can you not know? It's so simple."

Un sorriso vero, aperto, gentile, di quelli che ti sciolgono immediatamenteA genuine, open, kind smile, one of those that immediately melt

un po' della tensione che hai accumulato nelle spalle senza nemmeno accorgertene.a bit of the tension you've built up in your shoulders without even realizing it.

Mi ha spiegato tutto con molta calma, indicando i cartelli mentre parlava. She explained everything to me very calmly, pointing at the signs as she spoke.

Dovevo prendere la linea verde in direzione nord,I had to take the green line in the direction of north,

fare esattamente due fermate, scendere a una certa stazione e poi prendere la linea rossa per due fermate ancora.ride exactly two stops, get off at a certain station and then take the red line for two more stops.

Semplice, diretto, chiaro.Simple, direct, clear.

Era più facile di quanto pensassi. It was easier than I had thought.

Ma senza di lei avrei probabilmente continuato a girarmi in tondoBut without her I would probably have kept going around in circles

per chissà quanto tempo, perdendo l'orientamento e forse anche il mio appuntamento del pomeriggio.for who knows how long, losing my sense of direction and maybe even my afternoon appointment.

L'ho ringraziata con calore, forse anche a un po' troppo entusiasmo.I thanked her warmly, perhaps with a bit too much enthusiasm.

She made a small gesture with her hand, one of those Italian gestures that are worth a thousand words,

come a dire: "Figurati, non è niente, prego", e ha tranquillamente ripreso a leggere il suo giornale.as if to say: "Don't mention it, it's nothing, you're welcome," and calmly went back to reading her newspaper.

Quella piccola cosa, quel momento di gentilezza spontanea da parte di una sconosciuta totale,That small thing, that moment of spontaneous kindness from a complete stranger,

mi ha cambiato completamente l'umore nel giro di 30 secondi.completely changed my mood within thirty seconds.

Sono risalita sul treno con un'energia completamente diversa.I got back on the train with a completely different energy.

I still felt a bit dazed, sure, but also something much lighter in my chest,

come se la città avesse improvvisamente deciso di smettere di essere nemica e diventare almeno un po' un posto accogliente.as if the city had suddenly decided to stop being an enemy and to become, at least a little, a welcoming place.

I did the two stops on the green line, then I changed.

I did the two stops on the red line.

Ho controllato il display ogni volta che la voce annunciava la fermata successiva.I checked the display every time the voice announced the next stop.

And in the end, after about 40 minutes of a totally unplanned adventure, I arrived at Cadorna.

When I came out of the subway and felt the open air again,

quando ho visto la luce del sole di settembre sulle facciate degli edifici intorno a me,when I saw the September sunlight on the facades of the buildings around me,

ho fatto una cosa un po' buffa: ho riso.I did something a bit funny: I laughed.

Da sola, in mezzo alla gente che camminava veloce sul marciapiede,Alone, in the middle of the people walking fast on the sidewalk,

con il trolley in una mano e il telefono quasi morto nell'altra.with my rolling suitcase in one hand and my almost dead phone in the other.

Ridevo perché era finita, perché ero arrivata,I laughed because it was over, because I had arrived,

perché tutta quell'ansia e quella confusione si erano trasformate in qualcosa di leggero e quasi divertente.because all that anxiety and confusion had turned into something light and almost funny.

E camminando verso il mio appuntamento ho capito qualcosa di importante:And walking toward my appointment, I understood something important:

perdersi non è sempre un disastro, non sempre è un fallimento o una cosa da cui vergognarsi.getting lost is not always a disaster, it is not always a failure or something to be ashamed of.

Sometimes getting lost is just a different, less direct way of getting to know a place.

Ho visto Porta Romana.I saw Porta Romana.

I hadn't planned it into my day, it wasn't on my list,

non sapevo nemmeno che esistesse prima di quel giorno, ma era bellissima.I didn't even know it existed before that day, but it was beautiful.

C'erano palazzi con le facciate color ocra e mattone,There were buildings with ochre and brick-colored facades,

un piccolo mercato su un lato della piazza con la frutta disposta in modo ordinato,a small market on one side of the square with the fruit neatly arranged,

A piece of Milan that I would never have seen if everything had gone according to plan.

Pensate per un momento alla vostra vita.Think about your own life for a moment.

Quante volte vi siete persi, in senso letterale come me in quella metropolitana, oppure in senso più ampio nella vita quotidiana,How many times have you gotten lost, literally like me in that subway, or in a broader sense in everyday life,

e quella perdita si è trasformata in qualcosa di inaspettato ma positivo.and that loss turned into something unexpected but positive?

An encounter, a discovery, an experience that you would never have had if you had followed the predetermined route.

I learned a few practical things about the subway that I would like to share with you

perché possono essere davvero utili se viaggiate o se state imparando a muovervi in una città italiana per la prima volta.because they can be really useful if you travel or if you are learning to get around an Italian city for the first time.

Prima cosa: preparatevi prima di uscire di casa.First thing: get ready before leaving the house.

When you still have a good internet connection and your brain works well because you are not yet in the middle of the chaos.

Look at the map, trace your route, and if you can, download the map offline onto your phone.

Those few minutes of preparation are worth much more than they seem.

Seconda cosa, e questa è importante:Second thing, and this one is important:

cercate sempre la direzione finale del treno, non solo il numero o il colore della linea.always look for the final destination of the train, not just the number or the color of the line.

On Italian subway platforms, the name of the last stop of the route is usually written.

Se sapete verso quale fermata finale state andando, potete capire subito se il treno è quello giusto oppure no.If you know which final stop you're heading toward, you can tell right away whether it's the right train or not.

It's the surest way not to go in the wrong direction.

Third thing, and maybe the most important of all: don't be afraid to ask.

I know it seems obvious, I know that sometimes people hesitate out of shyness or so as not to disturb anyone,

ma le persone, la grande maggioranza delle volte, sono gentili e disponibili.but people, the vast majority of the time, are kind and helpful.

That lady with the newspaper helped me in less than 30 seconds.

Those 30 seconds saved me maybe half an hour of confusion and wandering aimlessly.

Don't be afraid of your question; whoever knows gladly helps.

Sono tornata a Milano qualche mese dopo, in inverno quella volta,I went back to Milan a few months later, in winter that time,

e la metropolitana non mi ha fatto nessuna paura.and the subway didn't scare me at all.

Sapevo già dove guardare, sapevo come leggere i cartelli,I already knew where to look, I knew how to read the signs,

sapevo che se mi fossi persa di nuovo avrei potuto chiedere aiuto senza problemi.I knew that if I got lost again I could ask for help without any problem.

E la terza volta vi muovete con naturalezza, come se ci foste sempre stati,And the third time, you move around naturally, as if you had always been there,

come se quella città fosse sempre stata parte della vostra vita.as if that city had always been part of your life.

Mi piacerebbe tanto sapere:I would really love to know:

a voi è mai capitato di perdervi in una città straniera o in un posto completamente nuovo?have you ever happened to get lost in a foreign city or in a completely new place?

Come vi siete sentiti in quel momento? How did you feel at that moment?

Did you ask for help, or did you try to manage on your own?

Your brain works differently compared to when you study grammar from a book.

senza che dobbiate memorizzare regole a memoria.without you having to memorize rules by heart.

It's a slower path, perhaps, but a much more solid one.

Continuate così, ne vale davvero la pena.Keep going like this, it's really worth it.
