Guten Abend, liebe Freunde.
Good evening, dear friends.
Key words in this video
Guten Abend, liebe Freunde.
Good evening, dear friends.
Ich bin Adele.
I'm Adele.
Today I'm telling you a story about my first apartment of my own in Germany.
It isn't perfect, but it is my beginning,
and it has taught me a lot about life and about the German language.
Make yourself comfortable and just listen in peace.
If a word is new, that's completely normal.
Oft verstehst du es aus der Geschichte.
You often understand it from the story.
Ich stehe im Treppenhaus.
I'm standing in the stairwell.
Vor mir ist eine braune Tür.
In front of me is a brown door.
In meiner Hand ist ein kleiner Schlüssel.
In my hand is a small key.
Mein Herz schlägt schnell.
My heart is beating fast.
I put the key into the lock and turn it.
Klack. Die Tür geht auf.
Click. The door opens.
Vor mir ist ein leeres Zimmer.
In front of me is an empty room.
Der Boden ist aus altem Holz.
The floor is made of old wood.
The window is big and the evening sun shines in.
There is no table, no bed and no sofa.
Aber es gibt etwas Wichtiges:
But there is something important:
Es ist meine Wohnung.
It is my apartment.
For the first time in my life I live completely alone.
Ich lache und ich weine ein bisschen.
I laugh and I cry a little.
Kennst du dieses Gefühl?
Do you know this feeling?
What was it like for you when you lived alone for the first time?
Schreib es gern später in die Kommentare.
Feel free to write it in the comments later.
Slowly I walk through the apartment and say the words out loud:
Die Tür, das Fenster, der Boden, die Wand, die Steckdose.
The door, the window, the floor, the wall, the socket.
I notice that I need these words for the home every day now.
When I learned the first words for my new apartment back then,
I wrote little notes and stuck them onto the things.
Später habe ich meine App Camilo Fox erstellt.
Later I created my app, Camilo Fox.
An app that I made myself to practice vocabulary more easily.
Each word has its own picture and example sentences.
That way, words like socket, kettle or fridge stay better in your head,
and with repetitions at good intervals, you don't forget them so quickly.
You learn words for everyday life at home in a very practical way like this.
If you want to keep practicing after the story, you'll find the links in the description.
But now back to my first evening in the apartment.
Doch wie bin ich hierher gekommen?
But how did I get here?
Ich erzähle dir alles von Anfang an.
I'll tell you everything from the beginning.
Eight months ago I came to Leipzig.
I work here in a small office and I learn more German every day.
Am Anfang wohne ich in einer WG.
At the beginning I live in a shared flat.
WG heißt Wohngemeinschaft.
WG means Wohngemeinschaft.
You live together with other people and share the kitchen and the bathroom.
Meine WG ist nett.
My shared flat is nice.
Wir sind vier Personen.
There are four of us.
Jonas kocht gern Suppe.
Jonas likes cooking soup.
Mira spielt abends Gitarre.
Mira plays guitar in the evenings.
Tom ist oft nicht da.
Tom is often not there.
Ich mag meine Mitbewohner sehr.
I like my roommates a lot.
But in the morning the bathroom is occupied, and in the evening the kitchen is full.
My things are never quite in their place, and I have a wish:
I would like to know what it's like to live alone.
How does a place feel that belongs only to me?
Also fange ich an zu suchen.
So I start to search.
Every evening I sit at the laptop and read ads.
In doing so I learn many new words: the rent, the additional costs, the deposit, the landlord, the viewing.
The word deposit is very hard for me at the beginning.
A deposit is a security for the landlord.
In the end you normally get it back if everything is in order.
Siehst du?
See?
You learn one word and immediately understand a piece of life in Germany.
I go to the first viewing with twelve other people.
Wir stehen alle im Treppenhaus.
We all stand in the stairwell.
Alle haben Papiere in der Hand.
Everyone has papers in their hand.
I am a little afraid, but I say loudly and clearly:
"Hello, I am interested in the apartment."
Der Vermieter, Herr Neumann, lächelt und sagt:
The landlord, Mr. Neumann, smiles and says:
"Come along, the apartment is on the third floor.
Es gibt keinen Aufzug."
There is no elevator."
Ich zähle die Stufen.
I count the steps.
Es sind dreiundfünfzig.
There are fifty-three.
Upstairs, the apartment is small, bright and quiet.
It's not big, but I fall in love with it right away.
Ein paar Tage später ruft Herr Neumann an.
A few days later, Mr. Neumann calls.
He speaks fast and I don't understand everything.
So I say a sentence that I'd like to show you:
"Können Sie das bitte langsam wiederholen?"
"Could you please repeat that slowly?"
Er lacht und wiederholt alles.
He laughs and repeats everything.
Dann höre ich:
Then I hear:
"Die Wohnung ist für Sie."
"The apartment is for you."
Ich springe fast in die Luft.
I almost jump for joy.
Merk dir diesen Satz.
Remember this sentence.
Er hilft dir überall.
It helps you everywhere.
Am Telefon, im Büro, im Geschäft.
On the phone, in the office, in the shop.
Nobody is angry when you ask for help.
Der Mietvertrag ist sieben Seiten lang.
The rental contract is seven pages long.
I read it with a dictionary and a big cup of tea.
It takes two evenings, but in the end I understand everything important.
Ich bin sehr stolz auf mich.
I am very proud of myself.
And now I'm standing here in my empty room with the key in my hand.
Am nächsten Wochenende ziehe ich um.
Next weekend I'm moving.
Moving means you go from one apartment to the other with all your things.
Meine Mitbewohner helfen mir.
My roommates help me.
Jonas carries boxes, Mira carries lamps and Tom actually comes too.
Alle bringen Pizza mit.
Everyone brings pizza.
We sit on the floor and eat, and it is loud and fun.
Dann gehen sie nach Hause.
Then they go home.
The door closes and suddenly it is quiet.
Diese erste Nacht vergesse ich nie.
I will never forget this first night.
Ich höre den Kühlschrank summen.
I hear the fridge humming.
Ich höre eine Straßenbahn in der Ferne.
I hear a tram in the distance.
Ich höre mein eigenes Atmen.
I hear my own breathing.
Keine Gitarre, keine Suppe, keine Stimmen.
No guitar, no soup, no voices.
I sit on my mattress and think: did I make a mistake?
Honestly, I miss the shared flat for a moment.
Kennst du das auch?
Do you know that feeling too?
Sometimes silence is nice and sometimes it is hard.
Dann stehe ich auf und koche Nudeln.
Then I get up and cook noodles.
I only have one pot and one spoon.
I eat straight from the pot on the floor and I have to laugh.
They are the best noodles of my life, because they are my noodles in my kitchen, in my apartment.
In the first week I assemble furniture.
I brought a shelf and a table home from a big furniture store.
Die Anleitung hat keine Wörter, nur Bilder.
The instructions have no words, only pictures.
Ich denke, das ist ganz einfach.
I think, that's quite easy.
Es ist nicht einfach.
It is not easy.
After two hours the shelf stands, but it is the wrong way round.
Die Tür ist hinten.
The door is at the back.
I sit on the floor and laugh so loudly that I almost cry.
Dann baue ich alles noch einmal auf.
Then I assemble everything once more.
Fehler sind normal.
Mistakes are normal.
Beim Möbelbauen und beim Deutschlernen auch.
When building furniture and when learning German too.
Then comes a word that many people in Germany know well: the Anmeldung.
When you move into a new apartment, you register with the city.
Ich mache einen Termin im Bürgeramt.
I make an appointment at the registration office.
I take my ID, the rental contract and a form with me.
Die Frau am Schalter ist freundlich.
The woman at the counter is friendly.
Ich sage: "Ich möchte mich anmelden."
I say: "I would like to register."
Sie fragt: "Haben Sie alle Papiere?"
She asks: "Do you have all the papers?"
Ich sage: "Ja, bitte schön."
I say: "Yes, here you go."
Nach zehn Minuten bin ich fertig.
After ten minutes I am done.
I have a paper in my hand with my new address.
It is only one piece of paper, but for me it is a small victory.
Und dann gibt es den Müll.
And then there is the garbage.
In Deutschland trennt man den Müll.
In Germany, people separate their garbage.
There is general waste, organic waste, paper, the yellow bag for packaging, and containers for glass.
At first I throw everything into one bag.
After a week, a note is hanging on my door.
Bitte Müll richtig trennen.
Please separate the garbage correctly.
Ich werde rot, aber dann verstehe ich.
I blush, but then I understand.
Ich muss es nur lernen.
I just have to learn it.
I draw a small list with pictures and hang it on the fridge.
After two weeks I do it almost on my own.
Another thing is new for me: the bottle deposit.
For many bottles you get money back at the supermarket.
At first I think: why does the machine want my bottle?
Today I bring them back proudly, like a little game.
Und du?
And you?
Kennst du das Pfand aus deinem Land?
Do you know the deposit system from your country?
Oder ist das auch für dich neu?
Or is it new for you too?
Eines Abends klopft es an meiner Tür.
One evening, there's a knock at my door.
Ich habe ein bisschen Angst.
I'm a little scared.
Wer ist das?
Who is it?
Ich öffne.
I open the door.
In front of me stands an elderly woman with a plate in her hand.
Sie sagt: "Guten Abend, ich bin Frau Krause, Ihre Nachbarin von unten.
She says: "Good evening, I'm Mrs. Krause, your neighbor from downstairs.
Willkommen im Haus."
Welcome to the building."
Auf dem Teller ist ein Apfelkuchen.
On the plate is an apple cake.
Ich bin so überrascht.
I'm so surprised.
I say: "Thank you very much, that's very kind.
Möchten Sie hereinkommen?"
Would you like to come in?"
Sie antwortet: "Gern, aber nur kurz."
She answers: "Gladly, but only briefly."
Mrs. Krause sits on my only chair and I sit on the floor.
Wir trinken Tee und essen Kuchen.
We drink tea and eat cake.
She explains the building to me, when one cleans the stairs,
where the washing machine is in the basement, and that one is quiet after ten o'clock in the evening.
Sie spricht langsam und klar.
She speaks slowly and clearly.
Ich verstehe fast alles.
I understand almost everything.
When she leaves, I say: "Thanks for everything."
Sie sagt: "Wenn Sie etwas brauchen, klopfen Sie einfach."
She says: "If you need anything, just knock."
In diesem Moment merke ich etwas Wichtiges.
At that moment I realize something important.
Allein wohnen heißt nicht allein sein.
Living alone doesn't mean being alone.
One Sunday I'm hungry and the fridge is empty.
I go to the supermarket and it is closed.
In Germany, many stores are closed on Sunday.
Das wusste ich nicht.
I didn't know that.
I learn: you plan your shopping for the weekend.
On Sunday I cook with what I have: rice, an onion and an egg.
Und weißt du was?
And you know what?
Es schmeckt sehr gut.
It tastes very good.
Next Saturday I'll have a shopping list in my bag.
In diesen Wochen merke ich etwas Schönes.
In these weeks I'm noticing something nice.
Mein Deutsch wird besser.
My German is getting better.
In the shared flat I sometimes spoke English because it was easy.
Aber jetzt muss ich alles selbst sagen.
But now I have to say everything myself.
With the tradesman, on the phone with the internet provider, in the bakery.
Eines Tages macht die Heizung komische Geräusche.
One day the heating makes strange noises.
Ich rufe Herrn Neumann an und sage:
I call Mr. Neumann and say:
"Guten Tag, die Heizung ist sehr laut.
"Hello, the heating is very loud.
Können Sie bitte kommen?"
Could you please come?"
Er kommt am nächsten Tag.
He comes the next day.
I held a whole conversation in German and nobody helped me.
Ich bin so glücklich.
I'm so happy.
Small everyday situations are the best practice.
Do you also speak German with people in your daily life?
Zum Beispiel beim Bäcker oder im Supermarkt?
For example at the baker's or in the supermarket?
Even one sentence a day is a good start.
Aber es gibt auch schwere Abende.
But there are also hard evenings.
On a Tuesday it rains and I am tired.
I sit alone and the apartment feels big, although it is small.
Ich habe keine Lust zu kochen.
I don't feel like cooking.
Ich habe keine Lust zu sprechen.
I don't feel like talking.
Da rufe ich meine Mutter an.
So I call my mother.
Wir sprechen eine Stunde lang.
We talk for an hour.
Danach fühle ich mich besser.
Afterwards I feel better.
Ich verstehe.
I understand.
It's okay if not every day is easy.
The important thing is to get help and talk to people you care about.
Dann mache ich mir eine Regel:
Then I make myself a rule:
Ein Abend pro Woche ist mein Gästeabend.
One evening a week is my guest evening.
Dann kommen Freunde zu mir.
Then friends come over to my place.
We have four different chairs and three glasses, and we are happy anyway.
Jonas brings soup, Mira brings her guitar, and I have tea and Mrs. Krause's recipe for apple cake.
The apartment is full of voices again, but this time it is my decision.
I can invite guests, and I can also have peace and quiet.
Das ist der schönste Teil vom Alleinwohnen.
That is the best part of living alone.
Today, a year later, I sit at my table in the evening, drink tea and look out of the window.
Meine Wohnung ist immer noch klein.
My apartment is still small.
Das Regal steht jetzt richtig herum.
The shelf is now standing the right way round.
Mrs. Krause and I drink coffee together every Sunday.
When I think about everything, I have learned three things.
Erstens: Man muss nicht alles sofort können.
First: you don't have to be able to do everything right away.
You learn step by step, in the apartment and in the language.
Zweitens: Fragen ist keine Schwäche.
Second: asking is not a weakness.
A simple sentence like "Could you please repeat that slowly?" can open many doors.
Third: living alone does not mean being lonely, if you stay open to other people.
Once more, the most important words for you to take away:
the apartment, the key, the landlord, the rent, the registration, the garbage, the female neighbor.
Sag sie heute Abend noch einmal laut.
Say them out loud once more this evening.
Das ist eine kleine Übung für dich.
That is a little exercise for you.
Jetzt bist du dran.
Now it's your turn.
How was your first day in a place of your own?
Oder wie stellst du ihn dir vor?
Or how do you imagine it?
Feel free to write me a few sentences in German in the comments.
Sie müssen nicht perfekt sein.
They don't have to be perfect.
Ich lese sie sehr gern.
I really like reading them.
