보고 싶어.

I miss you.

사랑해.

I love you.

제가 아직 외국인 친구가 없어서.

I don't have any foreign friends yet, so...

네. 파이팅. 그리고 파이팅. 파이팅!

Yes. Fighting! And, fighting! Fighting!

혹시 한국어 말고도 구사할 수 있거나 배우고 계신 외국어가 있으신가요?

By any chance, is there a foreign language other than Korean that you can speak or are learning?

어, 저... 아, 저는 영어랑 중국어를 할 수 있습니다.

Um... ah, I can speak English and Chinese.

저 영어는 기본적으로 좀 하는 것 같고 요즘에 듀오링고로 일본어 하고 있어요.

I think I'm basically okay at English, and lately I'm studying Japanese with Duolingo.

어, 저 영어 좀 하고 있습니다.

Um, I speak a bit of English.

요즘 한국어를 꽤 유창하게 하는 외국인분들이 많이 계시잖아요.

Lately there are quite a lot of foreigners who speak Korean fluently, right?

그런 분들을 보면 혹시 어떤 기분이 드세요?

When you see people like that, how do you feel?

어, 약간 뿌듯한 것 같아요.

Um, I feel kind of proud.

한국에 와서 한국어를 배운다는 게 어쨌든 한국에 관심이 있어서 그런 거니까 좀 뿌듯한 것 같아요.

Since they came to Korea and are learning Korean because they're interested in Korea anyway, I feel kind of proud.

네. 되게 대단하다고 생각 들어요.

Yes. I think it's really impressive.

한국어가 원래 배우기 어렵다고 들었는데 좀 되게 잘하시는 거 보면은 아, 공부 열심히 하셨구나라는 생각이 들어요.

I heard Korean is originally hard to learn, so when I see someone who's really good at it, I think, 'They must have studied hard.'

아, 제가 영어 울렁, 울렁증이 있어가지고 한국어 쓰시면 오히려 감사한 느낌?

Ah, I have a fear of speaking English, so when they use Korean I feel rather grateful.

그러면 어, 영어 울렁증이 있다고 하셨는데 만약에 외국인이 직접 한국어로 말을 걸어온다면 어떤 기분이실 것 같으세요?

Then, you said you have a fear of English, but if a foreigner spoke to you directly in Korean, how do you think you'd feel?

어, 일단은 한국어로 걸어온다면 오히려 좀 잘 알려주고 정보도 제공해 줄 것 같아요.

Um, first of all, if they spoke to me in Korean, I think I'd rather help them out and give them information.

한국어, 저한테 한국어로 말을 걸면요?

Korean... if they speak to me in Korean?

네. 어, 그냥 되게 어, 한국어 잘하신다.

Yes. Um, I'd just think, wow, they speak Korean really well.

뭔가 예전에는 흔치 않았던 것 같은데 최근에는 그래도 좀 계신 것 같아서 뭐 어떻게 배우셨을까 궁금할 것 같아요.

It somehow wasn't common in the past, but recently there seem to be some, so I'd be curious how they learned.

되게 귀여울 것 같아요.

I think it would be really cute.

저가- 제가 이제 일본이나 다른 나라 가서 이제 하는 거 보면은 되게 귀엽다고 하시는데 제가 봐도 귀엽다고 생각하거든요.

When I go to Japan or other countries and do that, they say it's really cute, and when I look at it myself I think it's cute too.

음. 한국어를 배우는 외국인에게 가장 먼저 알려주고 싶은 단어나 표현이 있으신가요?

Hmm. Is there any word or expression you'd most like to teach foreigners who are learning Korean first?

어, 피곤하다.

Uh, 'pigonhada' (I'm tired).

이 단어 알려주고 싶네요.

I'd like to teach this word.

그 이유를 여쭤봐도 될까요?

May I ask why?

아, 일단은 살아가기 힘들기 때문에 힘들다는 표현을 배우는 것도 나쁘지 않지 않나 싶어서 알려주고 싶어- 싶어요.

Well, since life is hard, I thought learning the expression 'it's hard' wouldn't be a bad idea, so I want to teach it.

저는 인정.

I'd go with 'injeong'.

인정? 네.

'Injeong'? Yes.

약간 인정. 네, 인정.

Kind of 'injeong'. Yes, 'injeong'.

아. 약간 많이 쓰는 것 같은데.

Ah, I think it's used quite a lot.

네. 제가 외국인 친구들이랑도 얘기할 때 뭔가 영어로 약간 인정 이렇게 말할 만한 말이 크게 없어 가지고.

Yes, when I talk with foreign friends, there aren't many other things worth saying in English like that.

네. 약간 인정 알려줄 것 같아요.

Yes, I think I'd teach 'injeong'.

저는 감사합니다라는 걸 알려드리고 싶어요.

I want to teach 'thank you'.

제가 다른 나라 가서도 뭐 어, 아리가또 고자이마스를 굉장히 많이 외치는 것 같아요.

I think that when I go to other countries, I shout 'arigato gozaimasu' a whole lot.

그래서 저도 감사합니다라는 거를 알려주고 싶어요.

So I also want to teach 'thank you'.

네, 좋습니다.

Yes, good.

만약에 외국인 입장에서 한국어를 배울 때 가장 어려울 것 같은 부분이나 단어 같은 게 있을까요?

From a foreigner's point of view, is there a part or word you think would be the hardest when learning Korean?

혹시 한국인인 본인도 가끔은 헷갈리는 단어가 있을 수 있잖아요.

Even you, as a Korean, can sometimes be confused by certain words, right?

문법이나 맞춤법 같은 것들.

Things like grammar or spelling.

그런 것들이 있으신지 궁금합니다.

I'm curious whether you have any of those.

약간 이제 제가 요즘에 드는 생각이 학원을 끊었다라고 하면은 학원을 등록을 한 건지 아니면은 학원을 이제 안 다니게 된 건지라는

Lately I've been thinking: when you say 'I quit the academy', does it mean you signed up for an academy, or that you stopped going to one?

약간 이제 뭐라 해야 되지?

Um, how should I put it?

약간 같은 말이지만 뜻이 다른 단어들, 그게 좀 외국인 입장에선 어려울 것 같아요.

Words that sound the same but have different meanings, I think those would be hard from a foreigner's perspective.

약간 발음이 좀 어려울 것 같아요.

I think pronunciation would also be a bit hard.

외국인 같은 경우에는 이제 영어는 좀 발음이 쉬운 편인데

In the case of foreigners, English pronunciation tends to be easy,

한국어 자체가 받침도 많이 들어가고 이렇기 때문에 좀 어려울 것 같습니다.

but Korean itself has lots of final consonants and so on, so I think it would be a bit difficult.

어, 맞춤법 당연히 헷갈리고.

Uh, spelling is of course confusing.

뭐 약간... 약간 그 뭐지? 때우다 아니면 때다 이런 거 있잖아요.

Like, um, what is it... there's 'ttaeuda' or 'ttaeda', things like that, you know.

그런 때의 ㅓ, ㅣ, ㅏ, ㅣ 차이 이런 거가 구분하기 힘들 수도 있을 것 같고.

It might be hard to tell the difference between the vowels ㅓ, ㅣ, ㅏ, ㅣ in cases like that.

약간 한국어는 고맥락 언어이기 때문에 한 단어 가지고 되게 다양한 뜻을 사용하잖아요.

Because Korean is a high-context language, it uses one word for lots of different meanings, you know.

그게 좀 파악하기 힘들 수 있겠다 이런 생각은 들었어요.

I did think that could make it hard to grasp.

아, 일단 평소에는 잘 못 느- 못 느끼겠고.

Ah, well, in everyday life I can't really feel it, and...

네. 약간 발표할 때 약간 회로 속에서 안 돌아가는 느낌?

Yes. When I'm presenting, it feels like my brain circuits aren't running.

이런 거 조금 급-급박할 때 이런 거 말고 없는 것 같아요.

I think it's only in situations like that, when I'm pressed for time.

마지막으로 한국어만의 특별한 매력이나 정서가 있다면 무엇이라고 생각하시나요?

Lastly, if Korean has a special charm or emotional quality of its own, what would you say it is?

음... 되게 다양하게 표현할 수 있는 단어들이 많은 것 같아서 좋은 것 같아요.

Um... I think it's good because there are many words that can express things in varied ways.

어, 저는 한국인은, 한국어는 좀 특별히 좀 귀여운 느낌을 내는 것 같아요.

Uh, as for me, as a Korean, I think Korean gives off an especially cute feeling.

약간 동글동글하고. 그래서 그게 외국인들이 되게 매력을 느끼는 큰 한국어의 특징인 것 같아요.

It's kind of round and soft. So I think that's the big feature of Korean that makes foreigners find it charming.

어, 한국어는 모든 것을 구사할 수 있어서 긍정적인 표현이나 부정적인 표현을 구사할 수 있는데,

Uh, because you can use Korean to say anything, you can use both positive and negative expressions, but...

예를 들면 욕도 있잖아요.

For example, there are swear words too, you know.

일본 같은 경우는 욕이 없는데

In Japan's case, for instance, there are no swear words, but...

한국은 좀 욕이라는 걸 통해서 표현할 수 있기 때문에 그런 게 좀 매력적이지 않나 싶은 생각이 드네요.

in Korea, since you can express things through swearing, I get the thought that this is kind of charming.

그럼 한국어를 배우고 있는 전 세계 외국인들에게 한마디를 해주신다면?

Then, could you say a word to foreigners all over the world who are learning Korean?

저쪽 보고.

(Looking over there.)

한국어 정말 어려운데 공부 열심히 해주셔서 감사합니다.

Korean is really hard, but thank you for studying so hard.

파이팅 하시고

Keep it up, and...

한국어 진짜 잘 배우면은 사실 제가 생각했을 때

if you learn Korean really well, actually, from what I've thought,

영어보다 더 자기 감정을 표현할 수 있는 단어가 많은 언어라고 생각하기 때문에

I think it is a language with more words to express your own emotions than English,

좀 잘 배워서 같이 쓰면 좋을 것 같습니다.

so I think it'd be good to learn it well and use it together.

어... 어렵지만 구사한다면 이쁜 언어를 쓸 수, 쓸 수 있습니다.

Uh... It's difficult, but if you can use it, you can use a pretty language.

네, 지금까지 청계천에서 한국인분들에게 한국어를 배우는 외국인들에 대한 생각을 물어보았는데요.

Yes, so far at Cheonggyecheon we've asked Koreans what they think about foreigners learning Korean.

지금까지 인터뷰 내용이 흥미로우셨다면 좋-구독과 좋아요 부탁드립니다.
