Introduction.
I ask the children to forgive me for dedicating this book to a grown-up.
I'll say in my defense: this grown-up is my best friend.
And also, he understands everything in the world, even children's books.
And finally, he lives in France, where it is hungry and cold right now, and he badly needs comforting.
If all this does not justify me, I will dedicate this book to the boy that my grown-up friend once was.
After all, all grown-ups were children at first.
Only few of them remember it.
So I am correcting my dedication to Leon Werth when he was a little boy.
Chapter one.
When I was six years old, in a book called "True Stories,"
which told about virgin forests, I once saw an amazing picture.
In the picture, a huge boa constrictor was swallowing a predatory animal.
Here is how it was drawn.
The book said: "A boa constrictor swallows its prey whole, without chewing.
After that it can no longer move and sleeps for six months straight, until it digests its food."
I thought a lot about the adventurous life of the jungle and also drew my first picture with a colored pencil.
It was my drawing number one.
Here is what I drew.
I showed my creation to the grown-ups and asked whether it scared them.
"Why would a hat be scary?" they objected to me.
And that was not a hat at all.
It was a boa that had swallowed an elephant.
So I drew the boa from the inside, to make it clearer for the grown-ups.
After all, they always need everything explained.
This is my drawing number two.
The grown-ups advised me not to draw snakes, either from the outside or from the inside, but to take more interest in geography, history, arithmetic and spelling.
That is how it happened that at the age of six I gave up a brilliant career as an artist.
Having failed with drawing number one and number two, I lost faith in myself.
Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is very tiring for children to explain and clarify everything to them endlessly.
So I had to choose another profession, and I trained as a pilot.
I flew over almost the whole world.
And geography, to tell the truth, was very useful to me.
I could tell China from Arizona at first glance.
That is very useful if you lose your way at night.
In my life I have met many serious people.
I lived among grown-ups for a long time and saw them quite close up, and, frankly, that did not make me think any better of them.
When I met a grown-up who seemed to me more sensible and quicker to understand than the others, I showed him my drawing number one.
I had kept it and always carried it with me.
I wanted to know whether this person really understood anything.
But they all answered me: "It's a hat."
And I no longer talked to them about boa constrictors, or jungles, or stars.
I adapted myself to their ideas.
I talked to them about bridge and golf, politics and neckties.
And the grown-ups were very pleased to have met such a sensible person.
